Finally broke down and bought one. Never had any experience with a Ghillie, and don't know anyone who has. So what about it....did I waste my money or not? What experience has anyone had with Ghillies? :hmm:

Depends on your countryside. Tangled brush with thorns will leave you feeling like a fly in a spider web. Had to strip out of mine and carry it out in my arms. Lay in a heap in the back of my truck till someone stole it along with my spare tire. Sure miss that tire.

Those things must be excellent camouflage. My Wal-Mart "leafy suit" is fairly close to a ghillie suit and can be worn with little else in hot weather and over jacket, etc.in cold weather.

I use one for archery and turkey> I believe that they work very well and helped with a couple of gobblers. I also could have had a nice doe but missed with the bow.

The bad thing about them is that they shed in thick brush.

They work good hunting people. Had them walk right up to me, then fall on the ground when you moved. Guess they thought a monster had them instead of law enforcement.
They should work good on animals if as has been said you can stay out of the burrs and stickers.
Fox

You hit the nail on the head, Silverfox. The trick and the limitation for most folks is the ability to sit still. If you can't do that, then think in terms of those popup blind contraptions. Of course, almost any camo works well if you can sit still. In my experience with ghillies though, even the slightest movement looks like a whole bush moving. All it does is break your outline, and it does a good job of that.

BTW- It was a 17" Toyo mud and snow tire, hardly used, on an 8-hole rim. Doggone, was it a dandy!

Thanks for your reply. While I didn't say so initially,my main objective is attempting to put a stop to poaching, and secondarily gaining an edge on tom turkeys .

I'm fortunate in owning a little piece of dirt that is isolated and that backs up on two sides to a tract of several thousand acres of state owned environmentally sensitive land which is closed to public ingress-egress. I have a good, sound wildlife management plan in place on my tract directed toward deer, turkey and grey squirrel,so guess what :shocked2:.

The two local game commission officers who work the area are both friends, but they can do only so much given their vast area of responsibility and territory, so basically it's up to me to control illegal ingress/hunting. Here in Florida it's a felony to trespass on posted private property while carrying a firearm, but what do you do? A confrontation is the last thing that I want and even though I always carry a 1911 it's STILL the last thing that I want! But the poaching has got to stop, and now that cool weather and fall time is here it will be in full swing any day now.

Any suggestions?

I'd get a GPS-capable digital camera (Several Nikon models) that indicates location along with time on each shot, then go for clear shots showing faces and firearms. Then I'd get shots of their vehicle including license #'s.

Check with the conservation officers you know, but there is almost certainly a chain-of-custody procedure for submitting the digital files to them along with a complaint. It will probably involved allowing the officers to pull the memory chip directly from your camera and placing it in a sealed evidence bag with both of you signing the correct documentation. With location, face, firearm and license # in hand, I bet they can make an open and shut case of the whole thing- even if the ghillie works as advertized and the folks never know they have been photographed. The best kind of confrontration will be the one in court- the first and only time they see your face.

A digital video camera with a good lense and GPS caps. Film of their actions and where it happened and for the most part you don't even have to reveal yourself or argue with anyone. Let the cops deal with them later! Most of the time the local law will know who they are from the film.

I use one for hunting fox early in the morning and late at night. I'm usally in a soybean field and have had great luck with it.

I made a couple from a kit-type deal back in the summer. Here's a picture:

While it will probably be effective, the colors of that suit will have you looking quite a bit like Sully from Monsters Inc.
