Been think of buying one, and would hope for some feedback from owners. Also if you have a Picture of your Caywood Wilson please post it, as the photos on the Caywood site are only so, so....

Yes - mine in 24ga arrived on Christmas Eve. I'm very happy with it :)

Just a beginner at this board so haven't worked out how to post a pic, sorry.

I had one, a 20ga. Shot a nice bear with it, traded it for a .40 flinter. Very nice lock. I don't think you'll regret it.

I had a 24ga. Just sold it. Nice gun got extra fancy wood for free. Lock was awesome. Also just sold a Fowler. Also lock was great. Fast guns. Only complaint bore sizes just a little to small. Had to use undersized balls or thin patches. I like thick patches so... Overall great gun for the money. However the prices just went up around 10%.

Nit wit, that was a mean thing to do. you could've at least shot a ill-tempered bear! :rotf:

I also have one in 20 ga. I really enjoy shooting it. In fact, I took it out last week end and just for grins my buddy and I thought we'd bust a few clay pigeons.

This was about the third time I had ever tried shooting clays with it. And I didn't do too badly, either, IMO busting 4 out of 9. OK, so that won't win any prizes, but a guy's gotta start somewhere.

Some of the particulars about my gun, 41 inch barrel, I was shooting 2¼ dr. 2fg Goex, over powder wad, half of a cushion wad, 7/8 oz. 7½ shot, and a thin overshot wad, primed with 4fg. Now if I could just keep my head down.........

Mike - yes, special order - about 7 years ago - had to coax Caywood. I wanted something more like the originals which were walnut.

Yes, I got it through ToTW. Isn't it a small world here?

Richardn - can you tell me more about this gun? I wouldn't have picked it as being 7 years old - it can't have seen much use.

I think it's great - I took it out last Sunday and shot (off a rest at 25m) a group of five with all holes overlapping by at least half a hole.

Gets a lot of attention too - most guns here are Italian.

Greetings:

I've had my Caywood Wilson for just over a year, 20ga. I really like it, and have been shooting it with 65gns of 2f, a .60 ball, I use a Walmart denim material (about 0.18 thick) for a patch and spit for lube. Shoots right on.

The Mike Rowe lock is great too. One thing I had to learn was how to properly prime the pan on the Caywood. At first I was just putting a little bit of prime in (3 or 4f) just like I've always done with my other rifles, and was experiancing to many missfires. I talked Mike Rowe and Danny Caywood about it and they both told me to fill up the pan. By doing this it eliminated the missfires and still cracks off just as fast.

One of the greatest things about Caywood is they answer their phones and are available even after the sale.

i have had one for 8 or 9 years. it is 28 gauge. i have both rifled and smooth barrels for it. i have shot 8 deer with the rifled and lots of squirrels with the smooth barrel.i think the wilson lock that caywood makes is the best one i have ever owned/used. currently i only use the gun as a smooth bore. i am however building an early virginia rifle using the caywood rifle barrel, a new wilson lock and appropriate furniture for a rifle. overall i think caywood makes a great reliable, durable gun.

TMLA - In an earlier message I had stated that I wanted a British trade smoothbore in walnut. Caywood only offered maple and would not touch black walnut as they felt it was difficult to work with. I suggested english walnut and that I would even secure the wood. Turns out they had some english walnut and would charge an extra $100 to use it.

In any case I received the gun in 1989. Shot it 10 times in one session. That's it. When I was working I travelled quite a bit and had very little time to play around with the gun. Decided last year to sell it to someone that will use it.

Thanks for the info - it's always nice to know the history of a firearm. I'm sure I'm going to be using this one a great deal - thanks for selling it :)

I have a Caywood Wilson and there are pictures of it available on my site at: http://www.ccnnwebdesign.com/paladin/firelock.htm

The pictures were taken when the Wilson was new, which was back in February '97. The gun still works flawlessly and I wouldn't trade it or sell it for anything.
