I recently came into an ASM 1851 Navy in .44cal. It has the full Colt address and two raised screws for attaching a shoulder stock but no notch on the backstrap. Are the raised screws original to the gun? Should I get the flush screws, or a notched backstrap or just leave it as is? Thank you for any
advice.

Stocks are impossible to find so I'd just leave it

Is it one of the SAM'L COTL guns or the ones with Colt spelled right that Colt sued them for?

It's as it should be...Those two extended screws and the radiused notch on the bottom of the grip strap are what the stock attaches to on these, there's two slots machined inside the ears on the stock frame that slide over and those screws, and the bottom latch tightens into the notch on the bottom of the grip strap with a knurled nut on the treaded stud.

I personally think ASM put a pretty good revolver in it's earlier productions. Do you have that item handy so you can get the code of manufacture?

There is NO notch on the backstrap. Just the serial no.

In the late 70's/early 80s, ASM got "creative" and rolled the Colt barrel address on several models of their repro Colt percussion pistols. Colt was not amused, and a lawsuit ensured. However, the upshot (no pun intended) for collectors is that those ASM patent infringement pistols are of fairly high quality and are very collectable today.

ASM was producing barrels for Colt second generation pistols. That is how these ASM produced Colt addressed barrels came into existence. When production stopped of the 2nd gen pistols ASM was left with a bunch of barrels that ASM had already stamped the Colt address on the top of the barrel. ASM stamped their information on the underside of the barrel and put them on their pistols and started exporting them. Colt filed a complaint with import office and ASM had to quit exporting them to the US. I do not believe anyone knows how many of these ASM Colt addressed pistols came into the US but it probably wasn't a lot. You don't see them for sale very often.
