A wheellock carbine

Augsburg, circa 1560/70. Two-stage smooth bore barrel in 17.9 mm calibre, octagonal then round after a girdle and with a hog-back near the muzzle. On top with an inserted brass front sight and a plain iron rear sight, at the breech a double hare mark (one of them indistinct). The lock with external wheel and spring-loaded wheel cover and safety. Walnut stock with engraved bone inlays and iron trigger guard with finger rests as well as patch box. (Later) wooden ramrod with iron tip. The stock with several professional repairs, the cheek an old replacement. Length 100 cm.
A wheellock pistol at the Art and History Museum in Geneva also features a hare mark on the upper side of the barrel, but in combination with the Pyr of Augsburg. Hans Schedelmann assigns this mark to Hans Jörg from Augsburg, who is documented there for the years from 1563 to 1578. Cf. This system mimics only wheellock,This is a snap-matchlock. but the barrel and lock have a common regional features. :hatsoff:

Raszpla, What is the purpose of the half moon cut out on the top of the stock just above the patch box? I have seen this on several wheellock but can not see a purpose for it.
