Thank you, it's the information I was wanting. As far as the whole groove and land thing, it is irrelevant to me, I only was curious if that was the way Mr Hoyt normally cut them. As far as my research, it started a long time ago when I was a Tank gunner in West Germany. I went to several museums and castles, talked weapons with old timers, and attended a few Jager shoots. It coninued as I went on to be a Light Weapons Specialist in the Airmobile Infantry in various foreign places. After 28 years in the military, I worked in State Law Enforcement, and always talked to the old timers about guns. I'm no expert but I have been burning powder for 65 years.

These are custom bored and rifled barrels, thus they are not constrained by an industrial standard. That is why I am asking about what is normal for a Bob Hoyt .58 bore.

I have one in my gun room. I'll measure it. I shoot .575 balls and .018 patch.

That's the nice thing about balls. Most size problems can be solved with a different ball size and/or patch.

There's a mold maker in England that will make any size mold at a very reasonable price. Can't remember the name right off.

Are you running bare balls? .440 is standard size for .45

Says the much greater ease it is to commonly find molds in .440 than other sizes in the .45 range. Not to mention that historically most rifle balls were recommended at .010” smaller than the nominal bore. Personally I never saw much difference between.445 or .440 except in ease of loading.

One interesting thing to research is the belted ball rifles. These rifles require the balls to be precisely cast to match the grooves.
Fired my. .58. Hoyt barrel today, used a Hornady .570 ball with .18 pillow ticking patch lubed with bore butter.
First load was snug, second was real snug. Can't see well enough to determine accuracy, I did hit a small coffee can at 30 yards.

I have a Callahan .562 bag mold and a lot of cast balls stashed for my trade gun. I'm thinking I will stay with .570 or .575 with the Hoyt

The evidence is merely anecdotal, but those whose balls are patched a tad too tight tend to nip at the balls of a loosened persuasion.

I’mma keep em guessing bout my patchins…n avoid the nippins.

He seems to have found a niche. If I was 10 years younger and could see a lot better I believe I would tool up for reaming worn rifled barrels into smooth bores. Would be easier than rifling, and there seems to be a market for smoothies.
