I'm certain shooting bags in the period you mention were usually very plain and serviceable. If you want something to carry a lot of non-shooting 'stuff', get a cloth haversack to carry on the other side.
And, gotta disagree with the comment about white horns staying white. :nono: Horns that are used will acquire patina from handling. I have many horns. Those not used are still white. Those used have picked up oils from my hands and are naturally antiqued.

I would think that the later the timeframe, the more possibilities. As folks in the east expanded westward, they took what they had with them. A bag or horn made in the early 1800s, would be sufficient for any time later. Your mid 1800s persona would be correct as long as what you have was made then or earlier.

Sorry, misspoke, white can pick up a pitina they yellows it a bit, what I was thinking was it never looks dirty like white leather or clothing would.

And the American rifleman's hunting pouch from Track of the Wolf:

I also got a few little leather bags and pouches to hold my patches, balls, and tools. I also bought a Ted Cash rifle capper for my percussion caps. I'm so excited!! Will post pictures when they get here. You guys are the best!!

Thanks! This is very exciting for me. Is it normal to be more excited about getting a leather bag and powder horn than it is most modern centerfire guns I've bought recently?? :)
'You are my son, join us on the dark side' :haha:

Agreed. Good choices.

Not weird at all. You're in good company. Youve seen the pictures of us in our outfits? Haha. Yessir. Traditional shooting really changes your outlook I think

Guys I got my bag and powder horn in!!

They are PERFECT!!! Just what I was wanting! I am very impressed with both items, and glad I didn't skimp out. Now I'll have to get used to them and figure out the best way to organize my possibles and set them all up. I already adjusted the straps to where I wear the bag on my right at hip level with the powder horn an inch or so above the top of the bag. Seems to work well.

Thank you all so much for the encouragement and support. I am new to traditional black powder rifle shooting but so far it's been great fun, and I'm just scratching the surface for sure!!

Smokey

PS: I also bought the percussion version of the Lyman GPR and right now it's in the process of getting coats of Birchwood Casey tru-oil that I plan to buff out to a nice satin finish. Yep, I'm neck deep in this stuff now!!

Your probably heck deep in debt I would imagine, but once you have all your stuff you don't have to buy it again.
Congratulations on your rifle, horn and bag they look great, they will last you many years to come.
