I ordered a one-pound bag of dried black walnut hulls for $17 from the Zon and some 2-inch hemp herringbone-pattern webbing from Turkeyfoot. Last night, I mixed four ounces of the walnut with 3 quarts of water and boiled/simmered this for 30 minutes, then strained out the bark and simmered the hemp webbing in the resulting dye for 25 minutes, followed by a rinse before drying overnight. I am pleased with the result, and have enough walnut hulls for two or three more batches. I know some make fun of walnut dye for being overused. Let 'em laugh. I like it. Now to sew a strap on my bag.
