I think that the soldiers were allowed to load any way they saw fit as long as they had decent accuracy. The use of leather patches interests me alot. I had discussed and read about this from someone with knowledge. Since the twist rate is so slow, very methodical and tedious loading with carefully weighed charges, balls, (very consistant patches) would be needed for best accuracy. Reports of original rifle's accuraccy varied wildly and I suspect this may be why. Something to ponder anyway.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
The kit is ONLY for the most advanced folks. The castings are rough etc. Paying the extra bucks to have them make it, as well as a stock wood quality upgrade is well worth it.
With patched roundballs I have no problem getting "minute of terrorist" at 100 yards. The mold I designed that Lee made me (1.4 oz semi wadcutter) gives about the same ballistics as a Brenekke 16 ga boar slug except heavier. As the guide said as it sailed through the Elk's lungs:" Holy S--- Look at the f------ blood spray".
I have shot it out to 300 yards and have no problem hitting a VW bug sized rock.
Having spent most of my "ute" shooting deer with smoothbore shotguns and 1 oz deerslugs, I have great respect for large lumps of lead moving rather slowly by today's centerfire rifle criteria.
Good shooting!
