Shot my .40 over/under for the first time over weekend. Had 6 donated .400 balls and some prelubed patchs of unknown thickness.Shots 5 and 6 were inside cigerrette pack at 30 yds. Now I need to place an order for ammo. The bores measure .412 and .422, I know theres many schools of thought ,but I would like to use sameload for both barrels. Advice? Thanks,Jim

Sounds like a nice rifle. Turn barrel? If you were satisfied with the grouping, did you mike the balls before firing them or did the donor tell you what size they were? If not, order a box of each in whatever .40 comes in. That will give you 50 - 100 balls per box to see if you can work up different loads. Not for each barrel, but you may then work with powder & patches for the optimum.

What are you shooting? over/under sounds interesting!
I have a .400 Lee mold, If you have interest, I could do the right thing and put it in the classifieds section.

I suspect you'll need one variable between the 2 barrels because of the difference in bore size. I'd guess it could be either different size balls (shudder) or different patch thicknesses. You will find different patches to be much easier to differentiate.

brett sr,I'm going to check with a local collector about a mold but if I strike out with him I am definitly interested in your mold.I did mic. them at .400. I'm thinkin I'll order some .400 balls and an assortment of patchs to start. Is it ok to use two patchs together while experimenting? I've posted a couple pics of gun on the smoothbarrel forum under "double gun construction" if yer interested, thanks
