Leading in an ml rifle using prb? Unless you have been using some kind of bullet projectile it ain't gunna happen. As for describing the bore to potential buyers, you have been very forthcoming with you post. Refer inquires to this post. But, IMHO, that bore is just fine. Look to your targets for problems, or lack thereof.

If it shoots good, is easy to load, and not tearing up patches, it's good to go! Be as honest with potential buyers as you were here and let them decide it's condition according to their own personal standards. I wouldn't let anybody beat down a fair price over that barrel.

I now remember reading somewhere that Automatic Transmission Fluid Type F was recommended to prevent rust. Thought TVM was the source but can’t find it on their website.

Anyone know about that idea?

The Ford automatic transmission fluid was allegedly one of the closest synthetic versions of sperm whale oil. Not so sure if that is true now. I haven't heard as much about that comparison lately.

The old type F was exactly that, all newer trannys over the lats 20 years or so most use Dexron 2 or 3, good luck finding any type f, maybe an estate sale from some old gearhead like me

Can you feel any roughness when you run a tightly patched ball down the bore?
These borescope thingys are about the worst thing a guy can buy.....
No truer words have been spoken today. Guys, quit looking for trouble. The OP said it "shoots nicely". He would of never known of the pitting and rust 'till he just had to look 'closer'. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!

To the OP, I would advertise it honestly. Say it has some 'frosting of the bore' but shoots accurately.

In the ad on this website I referred interested parties to this discussion to see the bore pics and all of these comments - best way to let prospective buyers know all the details. Over 150 views but no offers yet. But I have patience as it’s a very nice rifle.

The problem isn't the barrel it's the scope. Showing way more than you want to see. Take a look in a magnifying makeup mirror. Bet you only do it once (unless your a woman).

I've never heard that before. Please elaborate, I'm interested in hearing more.

Really? Not being a smart alec, I've just never heard this before.

@NorthFork I have doubts about the relationship between Sperm Whale Oil and Type F. I've opened a transmission that had spermwhale oil in it and there's really no similarity between the two. The only thing they have in common is that type F, a petroleum product, was developed to replace spermwhale oil. I'd venture that type F was probably a huge improvement over spermwhale oil for transmission service. But the lineage of type F doesn't necessarily make it a good choice as a ml shooting product.

I'm NOT saying it has no place in the ml shooting but I'd not be sold on it just because of the relationship with spermwhale oil. If it does have it's uses, then I'm guessing that dexron or any of the other petroleum products would too. OTOH, petroleum products in general haven't had a good track record in ml guns, so. . . . .

I never heard of spermwhale oil used in MLs, never mind tranny fluid. I read accounts of oldtimers swearing on everything from bear to goose fat to beeswax and combinations. While I'm adventurous enough to know that M2HB's and 240B's run just fine 10W40, I have never thought of using petroleum on my ML's. See, difference is, I didn't buy the machineguns.
