A longer sight radius and more weight out front which may help to settle down the wiggles of offhand shooting, or not, depending on the upper body strength of the shooter.
The inherent accuracy of one barrel or the other will be no different.

That sure matches my experience with both.

Whichever you start with, once you get used to it you'll notice the difference when you try the other. And might or might not like it.

I started out with a Lyman GPR and its 32" barrel. One of my hunting pards shot a TC Hawken for many years. Years ago when we swapped rifles at the range I swore his was too short and he swore mine was too long. Now we each own both, and the differences don't seem to matter so much.

lest not forget age , longer, better! easier to see sights! also longer seems steadier to me

Dixie Gunworks, back in the early days tested the effects of barrel length using a .40 caliber barrel.
Their table shows an increase of 4-5 percent in velocity of the 32" barrel over the 28" barrel with the same powder charge.

Not much but it is something.

I feel the same way. My Lyman 50cal. has a 42'' barrel (Track of the Wolf) but the rifle is un-balanced so I'll be cutting the barrel to 36''and installing a peep sight.

I replaced the 28" barrel on one of my TC's with a 32" (50 cal). Seems to hang better, easier to hold steady, to me. On one of my others (my huntin' gun) I use a solid brass ramrod to add extra weight out front, better, but not the same feel. I do like the 28" for a quicker less bulky feeling gun out in the hills. My .54 has a 32" barrel also and seems to balance real nice. The longer sighting plane is a plus also.
Personally, I don't care for the feel of the long barreled PA style for shooting, they seem too barrel heavy for me. I do love the looks of them though, and I honestly have never handled a quality custom and I'm sure they balance much better.

Swamped barrels make even long barrel PA rifles balance pretty well; much better than a straight one. A PA rifle with a 36" to 38" swamped barrel is amazing.

Yeahman! I had a 33" straight barrel in .45 that always felt just a tad heavy to me. My 44" swamped and tapered .45 seems light as a feather and points better than I can!
