I've seen from time to time barrels with either a molted or stripe pattern etching (Brown/blue) done on rifle/pistol barrels. Can anyone explain how this is done?
I'd like to brown stripe my pisol barrel. Does one put browning solution on then wrap the barrel with cotton clothes line/rope or wrap first then soak cord with solution?

The guns in your example have a Damascus barrel on them.

The stripes are caused by multiple layers of steel which have been forge welded together in a spiral pattern.
This is done using a mandrel to form the rough bore.

There have been many different methods used to try to duplicate these patterns on a plain steel barrel.

Some, especially those made in Belgium are exceptionally nice and the only way to find out if they are fake or real Damascus is to acid etch the surface in some place that will remain hidden.

Interesting way to make a barrel.
I'm not out to duplicate those barrels exactly. Just trying to come up with something close or some kinda pattern just to be different. I like the method wattsy has going on there. But maybe a smaller dia. cord and browning solution instead of viniger.
So, does one wrap the barrel with dry cord then brush on solution daliy in a humidity box to get that kinda effect?
