Base Camp

OK, here is my next hair brain idea. I would like to make another woods walk course on my ground, but with a twist. I already have the road cut open and found a site for a base camp. It is about a 1/2 mile walk. I will be hanging various targets to get to the camp site, but here is the twist. I want to build a shelter at the site. Several days before the shoot, I want to call each guest and have them each bring one food item, Potatoes, carrots, celery, meat...you get the drift. The site is right beside a fantastic spring where the water first comes out of the ground, so water isn't a problem. Then when we get to the camp site we all have to share in preparing a meal, start the fire, do the cooking and possibly even camp over night in the shelter. So, here is my question. Does anyone have any pictures of a "base camp" shelter that I could build with the materials found in the woods, I think they are called a half faced shelter, logs stacked on 3 sides with a roof. Kinda like the Scenes in peoples front yard at Christmas time with the wise men and the baby Jesus in it, that type of shelter. If anyone has a very good description and pictures would be great I would really appreciate them. Thanks in advance.

Griz ya don't need a picture cause ya already know exactly what ya want. Biggest problem will be finding or hauling in the material to build it. Most half face shelters are built of what available around where ya want to camp. Sometimes some folks will spread a tarp of some sort over the roof area just to amke it a bit more water resistent. Most comfortable ones I have been in have the rear up about two foot or so, gives ya a bit more room then having the back side all the way down to the ground more like a leanto. Make sure the roof n sides are at least two feet thick with debris to keep out the rain n help a little with keeping in the heat from out front. hope this helps some YMHS Birdman

Birdman, you are probably right. I was just hopein' to see a couple picture of what other folks use to get a couple ideas, andf use what I like in different designs to come up with my own shelter. Well, back to the woods and gathering dead trees :hatsoff:

That sounds like a blast!!!! Wish you werent so far away Id love to join you on the excursion. Sounds like it could be loads of fun. What a way to get together with family and friends and relive the past in the real world. Awsome just plain awsome!!!! :hatsoff:

Wis, you have no idea how ready I am to get started. I have had so many ideas running through my head that I'm getting confused as to which shelter I am building, but I am getting it narrowed down. I wish a lot of you guys were closer so that you could join in. That would be a good day in the woods.
