AHHHHHH! Its a good morning!
Think I'll leave it in till noon.Could go a little more.Lots of nice clear oil.
Lesson #1-Don't fill the crock the whole way to the top.Didn't have an overflow but it was close!

Swampy,Had a pic on earlier but it gone.Put it thru a white T-shirt,put water in bottom of pan with oil, warmed but not boil, restrained in T-shirt and its coming up yellow. Will do the water about 2X more to remove any salts.
Did I do something wrong or is it PA Bears?

I'm not sure if age may have something to do with that or condition of the fat. I had an Adirondack young bear that came out clear as water but the New Brunswick bears my Uncle gets have a yellow cast to it, still clear just not like the first bear I did. You still need to let it sit and settle a while anyway.

Mixed results. The first batch turned out fine....I think.Getting whiter but I want to heat with water 2 more times yet to remove any salt.

Other batch.....Well did like the other but when I put it on the heat with the water to remove any salts,it came to a slight boil.Put outside last nite with temps in the 40's to separate in the water.Checked this morning and I had thin Crisco.Live and learn.

Still have about 7 gal of fat to do.Put it in the freezer for another time this winter.

No, you need patience with rendering bear fat, to get the oil. Let the jars sit somewhere at a warmer temp, 70, 80 degrees and in time the oil will separate and come to the top. Can take months for this to completely happen. Now, if at room temp whats in the jar is still hard like crisco and shows no sign of being "liquidy", if thats a word, then the temp was to high and you won't get any oil. But, it's still very usable.

The thicker white lube you can swirl around easily but thicker than the oil.

The oil,now after 3X in water and warm, has gone from yellow to cloudy white after setting about 6 hrs.Is this what I can use for patch lube or is it what comes to the top in couple months.

Give it all time to settle. Get as much oil as possible. The oil can be used for a number of things. You can use it as a patch lube, Lube your locks with it, an old Adirondack trapper swore it cured rheumatism, arthritis, all kinds of ailments, just rub it on the spot. Cured everything far he was concerned and he lived to be almost 90.

I'm told using it to fry donuts makes the best ya ever had. The lard makes the best pie crust you ever had.

The left over lard can still be used as a patch lube or ingredient in a lube. When you use this or oil mixed with another ingredient to make a patch lube, thats called bear grease. I do this because it makes more lube and lasts longer. You look like your going to have plenty do whatever you want to with it.
