This a beautifully crafted custom Hawken style rifle from late 60s-70s. This date is based on the H.W. Robbins lock and he was active during that time. The rifle is marked L. Papesh in underside of barrel. This is undoubtedly Leroy Papesh who was active in the Joliet (Illinois) Muzzleloaders. His son Ken was also a builder of fine muzzleloaders and this rifle shows where he got his talent from. the 32.75" G.R. DOUGLAS barrel has an excellent bore. There is some honest wear to the browned finish, but nothing not expected on a 50+ y/o rifle that was shot in competition. The Walnut stock has only the most minimal handling marks. It has iron fittings and pewter inlays. A truly outstanding rifle. Asking $1200 + shipping in cheap hard case. Trust me on this precaution.

I'm too old now to carry a real copy of a Hawken like this one hunting, but I can still appreciate the craftsmanship that Mr. Papesh put into this gun. Somebody is going to be REAL HAPPY when they buy it. Good luck with the sale.

This is a great price for a reasonably light Hawken in .50 caliber. The real key is how well done the snail drum breech plug is, the tang, and the cheek piece. There are some other things not so correct, but for an early attempt at a Hawken, this was a very good piece of workmanship. All the inletting is tight, and even the varnish is correct for a real Hawken, just not so shiny. Whoever snatches this up is getting a bargain. Have Bobby Hoyt bore the barrel out to .54 caliber, perhaps .58 caliber if the screw holes, and dovetails will allow. That would drop the weight down close to 9 pounds.
