Although it may not be traditional, I am afraid I might have to do some bedding to fix some factory SNAFUs on my GPR kit.
Mostly to fix uneven inletting on trigger guard and tang.

Has anyone ever tried to bed with something like JB Weld or five minute epoxy? What to use for a release agent?

If only using as a leveler, would something like bondo work?

Use acraglas. You can buy it from Brownells. DO NOT use those other products. They are not made for this kind of work. There are lots of release agents. The kit with Acraglas comes with release agent sufficient for the work. You can also use wax, kitchen sprays(PAM), modeling clay, window pane putty, and other things to plug holes and coat other items that you don't want epoxy getting into.

Another vote for Acraglass gel. The kit comes with RA and it works very well. On barrels I like to put some masking tape on the steel before I put the RA on. If by some chance the bedding sticks, it will stick to the tape. If I want a super tight fit I don't use the tape. Ron

That stuff will work as it's just filling in gaps and not absorbing recoil.... I've used them, along with bisonite, brownells steel bed and acraglas. I currently use Devcon to bed my rifles and carnuba wax for a release agent.

Well, that might be a bit strong.

I have been using Pro-bed 2000 from Score-Hi and I have found it works very well. I can recommend it highly. It is nice and thick, easy to work with when wet, and easy to carve with a chisel after it is dry for close clean-up. Get the "brown" mix. The 8 oz kit has done two rifles and a pistol for me with plenty left.

I think Paul was referencing only the 2 products of the 5 minute epoxy and the JB...

I like the Acraglas...I use the "gel", just follow the directions inside...

OldFord: I never heard of your product. I certainly was not talking about it. I was referring to the Bondo and the other fast epoxy product mentioned. If ScoreHi works, I am all for it, too.
I have used Acraglas- beginning about 45 years ago, and I have enough experience with it to believe it works for a variety of project problems. I have used it most to bed modern rifle stocks. Very few MLers need any kind of additional bedding, in my experience. I actually like to use it inside the lock mortise, with a thin coat to seal the wood and add strength to this weakened part of a Side lock stock. The secret to doing this successfully is the word "thin".

I have used both of those with good results. Have also used Accraglass, Accraglass gel, Smooth On and mixes of wood glue and sawdust.

Pastewax makes a good release agent. The release agent that comes with the accraglass products is tedius to use and just a pain in the butt, IMO.

If you think your work time might be to long for five minute epoxy, use the slower cure stuff.

All the gprs I've worked on had difficulties in the areas you stated. You are doing the right approach in taking care of it now instead of later.

When working with your trigger inletting be sure to try both the set and unset triggers before you finalize. They have to be in the right spot or you could end up with a single set only trigger. You probably guessed how I know that. :haha:

Oh, sorry Paul, I see my mistake re: the intent of your post. I haven't used Acra-glas, just the Pro-Bed 2000 that I purchased from MBS, and it does work very well, IMHO.

I would use acraglass and the paste wax release agent I have used it on several guns, most of the bulders around here seem to favor it.

Having bedded benchrest and scheutzen rimfire & c'fire rifles ... I'd opine that Pro-Bed 2000 (www.scorehi.com) as the best bedding epoxy on the market. It contains non-compressible micro-balloons within the mix. I use Pam cooking spray with olive oil as the release agent. In my experience it beats all other Brownell's bedding products hands down, and that's saying something.

I have used expoxy in some wood to wood bonding applications, but I would be wary of it for a bedding type of application. I have seen it raise with stains and with wood sizing with humidity...that's why I use the acraglas...JMHO

Hope you mind me jumping in here with a slightly related question.

Since you mentioned bedding compounds, how many of you builders bed your barrel channel? I realize that the nature of cleaning a BP gun is different from modern cartridge guns, but I was just curious. . .

Well, Brownell's will probably not comment on this but I'd bet dollars to donuts that acra glass and acra gell are not much different from any of the commonly available epoxies out there. I like the gel ok because it doesn't flow like the glass does, but Smooth On as used in bow building is much better in that charachteristic and performs real well.
