I am considering putting a belt hook on my next pistol project. (A highwayman dispatcher).

The 2 current available hooks that I have found appear to be mounted with one sidelock screw. Even if they are inletted, do they work loose eventually?
Is there a balance issue in relation to location and length that will affect retention?
Are there any tricks to making them actually work?

As long as the base is inletted, one screw will work well. As far as balance, that is something you will have to work out. I have two pistols with hooks and both are secured with the main lock bolt. I have had no problem with balance.

Does the base have a prong that goes down into the wood to resist torgueing around the screw?

I will probably do just that. I could machine a blind circular pocket on the backside of the hook, then insert and solder a stud.
Thanks for the info.

I have used belt hooks on a couple of pistols. One iron and one brass. Both had bases with oval studs cast into them. Just inlet the stud and it will not torque out. I used the lock screw and they ballanced well. They came from Dixie Gun Works. Good luck.
