From what I've read, Navys liked them.
Of course most of the time all of the guns were locked up on board ships, so it wasn't like they were walking around with their guns on their hips a lot.

Time period? During the entire period when the single shot, hand held pistol was popular.

I think several of the Scottish pistols also had belt hooks, probably to prevent the Scotts from mistaking a holster for a Bagpipe and blowing it during the battle? :: :: ::

If you want to carry a flintlock, a belt hook was and is the best way to do it. Belt holsters were almost unheard of during the flintlock period. Why? Because they are nearly impossible to make comfortable and secure.

Reasons not to have a belt hook? If your belly makes it uncomfortable to stuff a horse pistol in your belt. For most of us that happened somewhere between 18 and 25!

If you ride a horse you might not have a belt hook one your pistol. You have pommel holsters, and the horse carries them for you.
