i use linen from joannes. they, at the time, had three thicknesses. the middle one miked at .013. i bought two yards on sale at 10bucks a yard. irishtoo.

When I started in this BP game I made my first patches from some calico curtain lining that I had. While a little on the thin side, it actually works quite well.

Little late getting in on this, but i went to the goodwill and bought the biggest dress they had made out of linen. Cost me $3.50 for about a yard and a half of material.

Look for cotton drill, sometimes called "pocket drill". If Wal-Mart doesn't have it, I know Jo Ann Fabrics carries it. It will measure about .015 in the store but once washed, it will have an uncompressed thickness of about .018 and a compressed thickness of about .008. This significant difference between uncompressed and compressed thickness will result in a good tight seal in your bore. 100% cotton drill is great stuff in most guns. If you want to give it a try, first buy a small amount to see if your gun likes it. Make a small identifiable mark on the end of the paper tube on which the fabric is rolled. I'm pretty sure you will find that this material will work for you. If it works for you like I think it will, go back and buy several yards from the exact same bolt. Look for your mark to be sure it is the exact same bolt of cloth. The stuff can vary slightly in thickness from one bolt to another so be sure that you get the same fabric that you tested. If you buy 5 yards or so, it will last you for a very long time before you have to go hunting for it again. But test a small quantity first before you buy a large amount.

Lucky to have found one that fit so well! Photos? :rotf:

Yeah, really! (No photos available at this time :) )

I suggest you mention to the cashier "my wife will look good in this dress"

I just got back from visiting both my local (25 miles one way) Jo-Anns and Hancock fabric, neither one of them knew what I was talking about when I mentioned No. 40 pocket drill :shake: . They were out of .015 pillow ticking also :( .

I am mystified how you came up with the term "NO. 40" pocket drill. I did not use that term. I have purchased the fabric under the names of either "drill" or "pocket drill" in more than a couple of Jo Ann Fabric shops and in every case, they either called it "pocket drill' or just "cotton drill". Some places call it pocket drill because it is used to make pockets. It is a tightly woven, long wearing fabric. Anyone who is knowledgeable about fabrics should know what cotton drill fabric is. Drill is a particular type of tight weave. Cotton drill is simply a fabric made of cotton and woven in a drill weave. You may have to ask for "drill" and then specify that it be 100% cotton or you may have to ask for fabric for making pockets. They do carry it even though the salesperson doesn't know what it is.

I called it #40 pocket drill because that was what was on the label on the bolt.

There is a recent topic that had a link to JoAnn's web site with all the stock numbers and SKU number so the store should have no trouble finding pocket drill.
