Well, The Pedersoli Bess carbine is supposed to be here day after tomorrow so today i cast a few dozen round balls, and lubed a strip of denim for patching. All i need now are some .11 ga wads, and i should be good to go. It is supposed to come with a couple of flints so i have enough to try it out at least. Will need to pick up some more flints though. If it ain't raining Friday i may get to try her out. I have plenty of different sizes of shot to try in her too.

Rebel, the ramrod may be a tad sticky and hard to remove at first, whipe it down good with a degreaser to remove any oils and it'll work easier, I noticed this is a problem with new besses...

There are many good loads found throughout the smoothbore section, so that shouldn't be a problem...

My bess loves Fg, but it's messy...

FFg works good and FFFg will burn holes in my patches no matter what it's lubed with, but that's with the long barrel, a carbine may be fine with the faster powder...

Keep us posted...

Musket Man, this is not a new Bess. I bought it from the ad here in the classifieds. I always use an overpowder wad and a fiber cushion wad,( i glue them together before i lube the cushion wad) under the patched ball in a smoothbore. Seems to give a better seal, better accuracy, and protects the patch. By gluing the two wads together you only have to handle one item instead of two seperate ones. Makes it quicker to reload.

Rebel,

I was thinking a deep loading block would work well if you use wads under your patched round balls. Just shove it all in at once.

Only need it for quick reloading anyway. 3-4 extra shots for hunting. All of them just to make us feel better, cause we know its only the one already in the gun that counts anyway! :m2c:

Well, that might just work. Would have to give it a try and see if the wads would get pushed into the bore ok. And you are right. It is the shot in the barrel that is the one that counts. None of us ever miss now do we. ::

To own a Bess has been my dream also. Over the years I have bought and traded guns and never once got a Bess.......That's my fault. But this year if all goes well I'm getting one. I'll even take a used one.....

You guys won't believe this but I bought a Bess 15 years ago (a Pedersoli) when I joined a Rev. War group. Financial reasons and unit cohesion not being the highest -mostly the money thing- I dropped out and sold what little gear I had accumulated. But not Bess. So now she hangs on the wall never having been shot under my daily shooter a Tenn. Mtn. rifle. Can't seem to part with her just too damn good looking I guess.
