Best Flintlock Replacement for Lyman Great Plains Rifle

I have ordered a flintlock replacement barrel for my Great Plains rifle. Is there an aftermarket flintlock that will fit so that I can use both it and the factory percussion lock without removing wood? I want to be able to use both locks.

Without removing any wood the best option is to find GPR flintlock. I don’t know if Lyman is still selling them or if you have to find a used one.

Check out L&R locks. Their booklet says they have a lock to fit Lyman rifles.

I put an L&R flintlock in a CVA Frontier stock. It wasn't exactly a drop in but I only spent about an hour doing a little chisel work and sanding.

Yup they sure do. I have one and it works great. But you will need to do some fitting for it.

Sounds good. Where did you find a flint barrel for your GPR? I have a percussion GPR and am wanting a flint rifle. I like what you are doing. They may be the way I would like to go.

Thanks. They still have the 50 caliber barrels but not the 54 caliber. But a 50 would work. The barrel is $352. When I bought my GPR from Natches way back in the early 1990s I paid about $230 for the completed rifle. Oh well.

The L&R lock shows to cost $212 with 2021 prices. So for $564 or so I can go dark. Hmmm? Gotta think about this.

Mattioc (sp?) has a flinter for sale here for another $100.
Might be worth it to save a lot of effort, and to have 2 guns.

I can buy the entire rifle from Hinterlands for $680. Yes it is more, but $350 for a barrel only? Not for me.

I was at the range shooting yesterday with @BigAl52; he was shooting his Lyman GPR, with an L&R Replacement Lock…never misfired, great shower of sparks…gun always went off. Admittedly, a lot of this goes to the skill that @BigAl52 has with a flintlock, but yeah…I’m convinced. That lock is amazing.

Aren't there two different renditions of the Great Plains rifle? Most were made by Investarm, but for a time they were made by Pedersoli. You will have to make sure to get the right one, I doubt they are interchangeable.

Yes, original ones were Investarms, later ones were Pedersoli ! I do not know it they interchange or not. I imagine they did not change it very much if at all. It was successful and sold well, so there really was no reason too. IMHO

I am seriously considering an Investarms Gemmer Flintlock. I have an orig Investarms GPR and love it. I am hoping these are as good? Not sure about the coil spring Lock, but I have not heard any issues on it, heck Ruger went to coil springs on their products? Go figure

T/C has used coil spring locks since they started. I have never heard of one breaking. You are more likely to break the traditional flat springs than a coil spring. No they aren't true to what was made in the beginning but they work and are reliable. I'm not a reenactor trying to relive life 300 years ago so don't really care.

My first muzzle loader was a T C Hawken I built from a kit . It was a nice accurate rifle and got me interested in the historical part of black powder shooting . I discovered the rifle wasn't a copy of an origional Hawken , and the coil spring was not historically correct . I bought a Uberti Hawken and sold the TC . No regrets .
