IMG_6770.jpegThis is Millie, the last of my 3 American Bulldog security force. Crack heads and gangs have taken this town and my girls kept us safe when we lived in town. Now we have moved out on the edge of town her job is easier, good thing because she is 13 years old and has cancer and arthritic hips that sometimes cause me to have to put her butt handle harness on so I can help her walk. She still looks like a puppy but she feels her age every day.

Hudson. Sadly I had to send Hudson on last week 16 years old and he had cancer. He will be missed. A shelter dog adopted at age 6 months by my youngest son, he came to live with grandpa and Ma 4 years ago. Some will notice he’s my avatar.

Sorry for your loss. Hudson has a face that speaks of sweetness.... He'll be waiting for you, tail wagging, wiggling, healthy and ready to keep living you on the other side.

I have never been a cat person and the bride never had what one would call her own pet. This girl showed up on our front porch at the beginning of the pandemic. Someone obviously dumped her off. She just stared in the front door sidelights all day until my wife fed her.

Well, she was still there in the next morning.

Then she had a run in with local coyotes, but somehow, with some assistance from a Ruger Mark I and a flashlight survived, though it was touch and go for a while. The coyotes didn’t fare very well. Short version of a long story, she hit the lottery and got the inside job.

Behaves more like a dog than a cat, at least the ones I have been around. Knows all the standard dog like tricks like high five, shake, roll over plus jumping through an old tennis racket for example. Also likes to pose for photographs.

Personally, have had more dogs than I can count, all with their unique personalities and virtues. You just never know from where and when your next ‘best’ friend will show up.

We have always had cats and I love them too. At home we only have one left that showed up as a tiny stray kitten 14 years ago. She stays mostly inside and is a spoiled sweetheart. We have a healthy population of Great Horned Owls, and I believe a lot of our cats have fallen prey to them when wandering around at night.

In addition to coyotes, we have bald eagles, and a variety of hawks and owls around here. Snakes, fury and feathered critters have a tough life in our neighborhood. 2000 plus acre lake and hundreds of acres of forest and clear cut land mixed in with some farms and residential houses. Not exactly Disney like friendly to our small fury friends, as my bride has figured out, though she hates to admit it.

Our last home nestled into a pine plantation on a 2,000 acre water authority property. Any given night could hear multiple great horned owls calling. Never appreciated how big they are until one night near home drove up on one on a kill in the middle of the road. He was fearless. Spread his wings as he stood on the rabbit and he looked like a B52! I turned the car around and took another route.
