I'd get a Lyman Plains Pistol, hands down. Best combination of price, accuracy, lock quality, authenticity and downright attractiveness on the market today IMHO. The Traditions Kentucky pistol has kind of a substandard lock. The Traditions Trapper, of which I own one, is a good shooter with a better (bridled) lock but is pretty clunky, ill-balanced and unauthentically styled. All of these pistols, however, have quality barrels that will shoot better than most of us can.

Generally speaking there are a few used single shots out there at any given time for less than $200, many around $100, check the local shows as you said, and check gunjoker and armslist.

I like my first black powder pistol, and give a :thumb: to the Traditions Trapper .50 cal. The price didn't make the wallet choke. And for me, it's plain 'ole fun as I mainly do target-shooting. ~wiksmo
