I need some opinions. Who makes the best percussion caps out there? Is it CCI? Is it RWS? Are there some that I don't know about?

I switched from CCI #11 to Remingtons, I had a bad experience last year with the CCI's (maybe a bad lot) and tried the Remingtons and have had no problems. I will try CCI again someday I'm sure.

I've had excellent luck with both CCI and RWS. RWS seems to fit a bit tighter which gives me the oppertunity to fit my nipples to them perfectly.

bigbore,
I think I've used them all at one time or another and I always come back to the CCI#11
magnums.I have never had a problem with them.
snake-eyes:hatsoff:

 CCI # 11 magnum............never failed me. The last time I counted I had 43 empty tins in my gun room and don't recall ever having a miss fire on account of the cap. (dry loaded a couple of times though  ..but that had nothing to with the cap)

CCI no 10s and 11s. Had too many bad experiences with Sellier and Bellot. :cursing: Failed a number of times, sometimes needing a third strike or even the fulminate fell out of the cap. :shake:

I am inquiring because my Ruger Old Army had a number of misfires yesterday at the range. It seemed that it misfired at least 2 shots per cylinder. On the second strike, it would go off.

I may just need a new set of nipples as I heard the factory ones aren't all that great.

bigbore, just have a look at the size of the nipples. sometimes they are a bit big and the first strike will only seat them properly while the second one will detonate it. Also did you fire caps only before you began to ensure open flasholes? :v

It's all I use as well, never had a hang fire with mags, have had hangs with reg caps both CCI and Remington.

It depends. CCI Magniums are the hottest, good if you have a rifle with a patented breech where sometimes the added power is needed to blast through crud in the bottom. However, if you have a gun with a light hammer fall then Remington can't be beat. They never misfire, and are nearly as hot as the CCI Magnums. I have two pistols that I have to use Remingtons in and they never misfire, but if I use CCI or German caps they will quite often require 2 hammer falls to shoot. I also use Remingtons in my Rugar Old Army for the same reason-dependability.

I've never had a Remington cap misfire, CCI's both magnum and regular, ive had misfires, even after turning a nipple so they seat fully.
Just trying the RWS now, they seem to be a bit smaller & required 2 hammer strikes until i put the nipple i'd turned down back in one rifle.
i get better accuracy with Remingtons too (over cci) but so far accuracy with the RWS seems to be on par with Rem's.
For me though i'd say Remingtons are the most reliable.

I use CCI mags too - I always put the caps on and then run the nipples under the hammer and press them down good with the hammer- pointed downrange of course! No misfires and I'm even using Pyrodex P propellant.

I use mostly CCI's becuase they are everywhere when buying. I got to say I think I've only had three or four failures in many many years and they were Remingtons but in their defense I think something happend the whole can so I tossed them all out. I've never had a failure with CCI's

Just a couple of thoughts on the missfires:

1. Maybe there was too much oil in the nipples (if you didn't cap-off first).
2. Maybe caps got stuck on the surface of the hammer or as in my case, the surface that the hammer falls on to. With my Colt Walker, I sometimes have a slight accumulation of fired caps get onto the channel where the hammer drops BEFORE it even reaches the nipples. This causes extremely light hits on the caps. On a second go-around with the wheelgun, the caps fire fine. If this is the case with the Ruger, both your caps and your nipples could be just fine.
3. If the caps are firing and the load isn't it could be just dirty nipples. When I clean my gun I always use Butch's BP Boreshine and I take off the nipples and soak them in the solution. Then I use a nipple pick to make sure everything is O-K. I don't use oil inside the nipples...never have! But I do oil the threads of the nipples as I re-install them into the revolver.

For the Walker I use CCI #11 Magnum caps. For the trade rifles I use Remington #11 caps. Never had a traceable missfire with either...always my fault (dry-balled once) .

Hope this helps, Dave
