I know there's probably been much discussion on this topic already but I've been away for a while and and I stll have this nagging question. I cuurently shoot a TC 50 cal White MT carbine, I use CCI musket caps and Pyrodex RS. My question is .. would Pyrodex P or some other FFF equivalent give me more consistent and reliable ignition? Thanks for any input Im still a Greenhorn.

I have had the best luck with my flint White Mountain carbine .50 cal with using FFF Goex. I use 50 grains for a target load and 70 for hunting.

GOEX !!!!
Been shooting BP since1988 I have had five or six misfires they were my fault not the powders.

IMO, Goex 3F...once you use it, you won't bother with anything else...fast, clean, accurate...ignition is instantaneous which breeds excellent accuracy...and about the least expensive BP there is, particularly if you can order a case...delivered price is around $10/Lb that way

The reason blackpowder is a Class III hazard is because it is explosively volitile. Pyrodex is safer to distribute and handle.

If Uncle Sam thinks it ignites better, who am I to argue?

Pyrodex will not work in a flintlock because it is too "stable" My flintlock fires with FFFg or even FFg as the priming powder. That tells me it ignites better.

I've honestly never used Pyrodex or any substitute in a muzzleloader in 29 years of shooting them.

When you refer to GOEX do you mean the GOEX Pinnacle FFF powder or something different?

The real stuff not the substitute for black powder Can't say if pinnacle is better than Pyrodex but real Goex FFF is better than both of those substitutes. IMHO.

Goex blackpowder. Pinnacle is a substitute. I accept no substitutes. :haha:

I see Randy Wakeman has an article on the Goex site praising Pinnacle. That alone will keep me from ever buying any. :rotf:

Agree..."words for hire" :rotf:...if I see the name on any site I'm browsing, I immediately skip over it.

Wink...I was talking about real Goex blackpowder...I use 3F in .45/.50/.54cal with patched balls, and 2F in .58/.62cal...outstanding stuff...best American made price/performance real black powder on the market

If you can put your hands on a pound or two of Swiss powder, give that a try. This is a traditional black powder that, in the opinion of many who have used both, is cleaner burning and more consistent than Goex. Main draw back - it is not as easy to find and it costs about 60% more per pound. I use Swiss for serious target shooting - like my corner shoot cards (got to mail those in!) and bullet/ball hunting loads. Goex for standard target shooting and shotgun hunting.

I don't think you can beat Swiss. I used Goex for a long time and then started using Swiss. Last summer I took some Goex to a range session and couldn't believe the difference. I'd always thought Goex was clean burning, and it is, but it can't compare with Swiss.

I agree with the others, that Goex FFFG is a great powder. I do use it in my .54, White Mountain Carbine, with a PRB. Good results. I also have tried Goex Pinnacle FFFG in the same, with good results. If you can get real Goex FFFG, go with that. If real black powder is hard to come by in your area, try the Pinnacle FFFG. It definatly ignites better than Pyrodex. I gave up on Pyrodex years ago. Too many hangfires/delay ignition. I see no advantage of Pyrodex, over real Goex, other than availability.

Swiss is also a hotter powder than Goex so you can reduce loads by 10-15% and get equal performance. I have also found Swiss to be more consistant and more accurate than Goex and much cleaner burning.

I recently purchased some KIK blackpowder and it has really impressed me. It gives very similar performance to Swiss and burns almost as cleanly, certainly cleaner than Goex. The best part is it costs less than Goex, making it the best value there is in blackpowder, IMO.

Im getting ready to order some KIK powder. Does anyone know how I should adjust my current loads, developed with Pyrodex RS Select? I have always used a volumetric measure. Should I reduce my charges any? I will be ordering FFG.
Thanks,
Idaho PRB

You may want to cut back a little. Kik is a tad hotter than Goex. In my rifle, Kik 2f performs about like a mix of Goex 2f and 3f.

I have always used Goex FFG in all my rifles. Had ignition problems the only time I tried Pyrodex and did not like it at all..... I have a 1 lb. can of Goex FFFG as last time I ordered I got FFFG for first time. Have not tried it yet, but after reading so many posts that say they like it....I am going to give it a try.

My question: Do I use same amount of grains as FFG or do I download a certain amount? example: 90 grains of FFG....can I use same in FFFG as it seemed to me that I saw to use less than FFG.
Thanks, Jim in Idaho

You might want to go down 10grs, I use Go 3 in everything up to 54 cal everyday shooting , if I scope it for 100 or 200 yds(I use the none drill base from Dixie) 777 and real target work the Swiss 3f I havent found the Kik yet , Pyro NEVER. and thats my 2 cents. Fred

Ive wanted to try KiK powder but didnt know enough about it yet. Mayby ill buy some and see what happens. But so you know I have a pound of Elephant 2f that im trying to burn up know. Not the best not even good. But it does go booooommmm. :rotf:
