I like a Surform rasp too, but not the flat one. It doesn't cut well for me. I like the convex shaped one, use it without a handle, duct tape the end for a handle. Sometimes I use a round one.
 
I'm like Herb, I could only get the flat one to work when there was a corner to take off. I bought the convex insert and found it worked much better, but I still think the horseshoe rasp gives me better control. Just more intuitive I guess. Bill
