Big Problem

Well, I finally got my Hawken all done and put together. Somehow during the repeated coats of browning some got down the barrel, despite the wood plugs, so it seemed a good idea to me to use liberal amounts of cleaner on a bore brush. Well, the cheap Walmart POS broke off all the way down. I have been trying to extract the remnants of the brush with a ball extractor, with no avail. Is there maybe a solvent that would dissolve the bronze bristles without harming the steel barrel? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Find a piece of conduit or thin walled tubing that will fit in the bore, make it longer than the barrel so you can hang on to it, push it down over the brush and pull the tubing out with the brush inside.

Today I wasted many hours in a futile search for a metal tube of the right diameter. I then called my cousin, who is a welder and very crafty, to see if he had any that would work. He did'nt but said to bring the barrel down, as he had an idea.

I get down there and he has a straightened coat hanger, with the end corkscrewed by being wrapped around a bolt. It screwed around the bore brush and pulled it right out. The patch jag I have would never have worked, the prongs being far too short.

Sorry you wasted so much time but I am glad you got it out. The tubing will work on a brush if you can find the proper size. The problem with a brush in a muzzleloader is, if it is on the large size the bristles can't change directions and can be hard to remove.
