Looking to get my first smoothbore and wanted to know if normal birdshot is ok to use in a muzzloader or does it need to be pure lead shot? I wanted to buy a bag of #6 but wanted to check beforehand. Any info would be great.

Any shot will work except for possibly steel shot. I use the same shot in my muzzleloader as i do in my modern shotguns.
The cheapest is lead. If you want to use copper coated, or such, yes it works fine, but a lot of shooting might mess with some black powder barrels. I've even used actual steel BB's, but I don't recommend it. I lucked out and found some lead #2 shot..., can't use it for waterfowl but it hammers squirrels.

No, it won't cause any harm to your barrel. The Magnum shot has 2-3% more antimony in it, making it harder and less susceptible to deforming. Less deformation = better patterns.
