Brit- sorry about the slipped fur. You need to split the tail and tack it out and let it dry, then use a tanning solution or paste to turn the raw hide into leather.
By "tack out" use small brads and space about 1/2" apart and tack the tail on a scrap wood board. The fur is down, against the board, and the leather is up, exposed so it can dry.
Splitting a tail can be difficult, the cut can become wavy or it is very common to cut off half the tail. First you use a tail stripper to pull out the bone. Then you use a tail splitter to make a straight cut.
See: http://www.fntpost.com/Products/Tools+for+Tails/Tail+Slitting+Guide
This same company also sells Dixietan or similar tanning pastes plus tail strippers. Any of the other trapping supply retailers sell the same products.
You might also want to skin the entire fox, these are "cased" you cut along the inside of the rear legs and then pull the entire hide off, the hide is dried on a wire stretcher.
You could ship a dried hide to: http://www.moytown.com/
I think they could tan the entire fox for around $15. Hung on a wall- makes a pretty nice trophy.

Gentlemen, this is how I did it.

We call it methylated spirit. You guys may call it rubbing alcohol??
I used the alcohol to carry tea leaf into the tail!
I reasoned that black tea is full of tanning and in no time the tail was done. How long it will last I am not sure but no fur is being shed and it is soft and flexible.
One tea bag contents were tipped in.

If possible, give us an update in 6 months- sounds like an easy method if it works. As I understand you used the tannic acid in the tea.
