Thanks

There is no doubt that with the right barrel, lock, sights, shooter and powder (black or otherwise) one can get good groups.

both rifles are custom. The tightest group is with a TC that has a .45 cal. green mtn cartridge barrel. The other 2 shots on the paper were sighting in, the last 3 were with no sight changes. The other rifle sports a badger .45 cal. cartridge grade barrel. Both were shooting a grease groove bullet with 2F swiss.

Thanks Guys. I haven't had great experiences with pyrodex. It seems harder to ignite? I'm definitely no expert however. I used to buy black powder in the 90s. Just seems weird I cant find it anymore. I'd like to try it again. Cabelas doesn't carry it. Buffalo Arms in Ponderay is 500 miles from my house. So I guess I'll order it. Again thanks for the help.

Do a google search for Bass Pro shops near you. They sell Black Powder and you can make a trip of it.

I think the nearest bass pro would be salt lake or Vegas. I haven't needed any for a couple years but sportsman's warehouse in twin falls had some then I could probably again give me a good excuse to go out you could give them a call it's only a 3hr round trip for you

IMO Grafs is the best with no min purchase limit. Same price per lb no matter if you buy one or fifty. It's just so much easier to order it and it's always in stock. I stopped looking for it at brick and mortar retail stores ten years ago. I don't understand how anyone has a hard time finding real black, it's only a mouse click away.

I think a big part of it is it's hard to swallow the $30 Hazmat fee plus the $7.95 shipping. The shipping charge is low, but the Hazmat fee isn't and it's the same charge regardless of whether you buy 1 or 25-lbs. With shipping and Hazmat fee included 5-lbs is $122.90, which works out to $24.58 each. That's $7.59 per can more than the listed price of $16.99. It's much more reasonable to buy a couple of cans at a time if you can find it locally, and that's why people keep asking.

Problem we have our hear is there is plenty of places to shoot and hunt but stores to get materials are few he will have a cabellas and maybe a sportsman's warehouse and then the mom and pop stores the nearest bass pro is Vegas, Portland or maybe salt lake all of which are 12 to 16 hr round trips so we can either order it online search the stores till we can find it out make our own. One thing I just thought I'd is see if cabellas will order some in for you I am sure some of there bigger stores carry it so Boise should be able to get it without paying an extra fee

Hi Dan.....but in my experience you can't buy it anywhere locally for 16.99 a lb because after the retailer tacks on his hazmat and shipping cost per lb plus tax it's still roughly 25 bucks a pound. Then you have to drive all over the countryside trying to locate it which adds even more to the cost. The sub powders around here, with the exception of Black MZ is around $30 per lb. Eliminating the driving and searching part of it is the main reason I order it, but at 5 to 10 lbs at a time, because if I only ordered one pound, with hazmat and shipping that one lb would be almost $50. Having to be present and sign for it at delivery is yet another drawback to ordering it, but in my minds eye that's still better than the driving and searching.

Yeah Jim,

I was spoiled when I lived in Vermont because the local shale quarries used it for blasting and I could get it just 6 away at the next village. And, it was cheap then - about $13.50 a pound.

Then I moved to Virginia and a muzzleloading group I belonged to there would have a dealer at their events who would sell some at a good price. I got both GOEX 3F at about $17/pound if I recall correctly, and got about 5-lbs of some of the Chinese stuff for just $10 per pound. Seemed to work just fine although it did foul a little more than GOEX. Then the Chinese stuff disappeared. Supposedly, they found out some of the Chinese stuff had been used in IED's in Iraq and blocked the importation of it, which was fine with me.

I haven't bought any since moving to Washington, so had no idea what the retail price had climbed to. Mail order always works but it's a lot tougher to plop down $200 to $300 to make it worthwhile than $25 for a can right now to "get you by". You're right on that you can waste a lot of gas and time searching for it though.

Absolutely. And all because of a dumb law that will not allow retailers to advertise the fact that they stock it. Heck, in most cases the only employee of an establishment that actually knows they have it hidden away in the back somewhere in "tabooville" is the store manager himself. Everyone else is oblivious and if the mngr is not around the potential customer is just simply SOL. What kind of crap is that?
