That's rich!
Nobody has told anyone to "not participate".

I would suggest you go back and read the whole thread.

People complain about powder not being local; we tell them where to get it.
People say they only want one or two pounds; we tell them that is not practical - and it isn't.
People say they can't afford it; well I can't afford a lot of things either. So those activities are clearly Not for me either - hard facts, life just ain't fair.

We give these 'people' all the options possible:
Where to buy it
How to buy it
Suggestions to afford it

Still the whine and cry that they "Can't".....and then their come back is "BUY IT FOR ME SO I CAN PLAY TOO!"

Instead of blasting responses like the last one I just gave, maybe YOU should give the poster YOUR grand response of wisdom that will put some powder in his store...enlighten us all so we ALL can gain from your wisdom.
The first sentence in the post you made was "Well, it just sounds like Black Powder is not a hobby for you to get into then.". That is exactly what you did and yes it is rich.

I was responding to the poster that said he could not afford it no matter what, it was not a comment to....did the shoe fit however?

When I got into this I was recently divorced, paying child support for two kids, car payment, rent, two student loans, and miscellaneous bills.
Only powder I could afford was with the club I joined; they charged us new guys $7 a shot until we could afford our own.
It took me a while to save up for a 4 lbs order - None in local California stores to be found. After that I saved up and pitched in whenever I heard a group order was being made...and...eventually I found a firing range that sold "1 lb per customer" and slowly bui lk t up my supply.

So when myself and Multiple others offer a new guy methods to obtain powder, and all suggestions are exhausted and they still say they "Can't do it"....then this hobby is just not for them - UNLESS you have an option not yet suggested, but I have not yet heard you make an offer?

Now; I was kind enough to offer him other Options; stick with firearms that don't require black powder to shoot (just about anything except Flintlocks, but I wouldn't know for even my Percussions like the black), or Archery, or fishing, or....

Now; you want to bash my comment - Where is YOUR suggestion for the poster to obtain black powder.

Let's stick to the Question at hand:

How can the poster obtain Black Powder?
What is YOUR suggestion?

(I think this falls in the: Put or .... up)

Hello All,
I‘ve learned black powder is unavailable here in the Green Bay Area of Wisconsin. Retailers only carry Pyrodex and a few have Triple 7. I have less than 1/2 lb. of Goex powder left and was hoping to buy a can for deer season. I do have a pound of unopened Pyrodex that was given to me, but I’ve never shot the stuff. If I resort to using it, what recommendations does anyone have that I should keep in mind? I’ve heard rumors about accuracy. Thanks for any help you can give.
There is a sporting goods store south of Green Bay that had black powder a while back. I will see if I can find the town.

I found it The Shooters Sports Center. Racine,Wi

My guns are the same as they used in the 1700's and my powder is the same as they used in the 1700's

And I mind what I use, not a real flintlock indeed, but you just keep on stepping in it.
I guess I am ignorant? I can't figure out how I survived without any knowledge of anything? "I keep stepping in it" ? I sure am lucky, I could have had it smeared all over me instead.

If you can't find a club locally that shoots blackpowder, or some out of the way shop that sells blackpowder and supplies in a short distance drive, then your best bet would be to place a 5 lb order thru Graf's. Looking at their web page this morning that would land you 5 lbs of Graf's/Schuetzen powder for 165 delivered to your door.
If you're shooting a cap lock rifle then Pyrodex will work ok, if a flint gun then you will likely encounter ftf or massive hang fire unless you drop a 5 to 10 grains charge of black in first.
You will need to take extra cleaning and oiling steps after firing to clean it up and prevent corrosion due to the nature of the potassium prechlorate they use to coat the basic black the stuff is made from.
Accuracy should be fine, but it may take a bit of load testing to find a good load, just like it does when changing any powder.
Good luck and have fun.

The problem isn't as bad as it seems, if you are shooting a percussion it will work just fine and I don't think you can tell hardly any difference as long as you use the same amount with a measure and not a scale. If it's a flintlock, you can go to a duplex load. You'll have to use about four grains down the barrel first with black powder, and then whatever the mount of other powder you shoot, like pyrodex, just subtract the four grains off and use a little bit in your pan priming, and your black will go a long long way if you're only using about 6 grains of powder by weight per load. There are 7000 grains in a pound, 1/2 a pound would be at least close to 3500. I admit, it will take a little more time to load, but we don't shoot flintlocks or percussion to get a quick shot. Generally most of us have time on our hands.

It is sometimes surprising how threats just turn in to arguments and picking at each other. Are we just a bunch of grumpy old farts with nothing better to do?
When you get on in years you have earn the right to be grumpy. Some of us have more ability than others in being grumpy. Some of us even like pulling someones chain once in a while. It is a game. There are no winners or losers just some crappy old men having fun. Enjoy life it doesn't last forever, at least on earth.

Reading the post has me thinking I'm on the young side of "Grumpy" (71) lol Being a rookie in the black powder shooting world I did learn something reading these replies. I didn't know that if you changed BP brands it would make a difference in how your rifle grouped. I've been shooting Goex but the local sports shop only had Schuetzen so I got a couple cans. I know you don't mix but I thought 2f was 2f! Now I know!!

I am called "Old Codger" for a reason. At 78,kinda crippled up, I don't have time for nonsense.

I do try to find humour wherever I can. Gotta laugh or die, and the latter is too permanent!
Stop moaning it’s good to be a fit old fart. 81 in March Lucky you in USA the police took away my shot guns incase I might shoot intruders, got 25 muzzle loaders but no police S1 permit to shoot them buy BP
, prison if I am caught making it, so I keep my guns on the wall, shoot squirrels with my 177&22 bsa pcp Scorpio air rifle, shoot ionx and compound bow and arrow too, got a 450/400 double unmentionable as it’s obsolete, so I cuddle it and dream of Africa London seems to be a Moslem town with a Moslem Mayor, so what’s new in this green and pleasant land called England. Haha I wish you all well from across the pond . Ps Wife don’t look bad after a good iron
