Since blackpowder is getting harder to find has anyone used the new GOEX Pinnacle powder? I actually spoke to the folks at GOEX and they recommended that you prime with BP and use the Pinnacle for the main charge. I havent seen any on the shelves at any local sporting goods stores. I have to drive over an hour to get regular BP. Just wantin to see if anyone has used it?

NO offense meant towards you, Shudy, but you can order powder shipped to you, by the case, granted, and buy it at about 12 dollars a pound. You probably need to find a couple of friends to split the cost, and order, but this is the cheapest way to buy Goex, or any other powder. Try the links here to dealers, and Graf &Sons seems to have a loyal following. I would not fool with Pinnacle. It is designed to be used in straight wall cartridge casings, which call for low powered loads to use in Cowboy Action shooting events. Use standard Goex 2F or 3F powder in your gun. You will be happier, and get more dependable results. Anytime someone tells you to build a duplex load, they are telling you that neither powder is really correct for the purpose you are trying to use them for. :hmm:

Shudy,
I gotta go with Paul on this one...B/P
is not all that hard to find and I for one like
to deal with Graf&Sons but there are other members here that like other distributors. That
is fine....to each his own. But to buy in volume
and split the cost with another is the way to go.
It tends to lessen the haz-mat fee($20) plus S&H.
Haz-mat fee is charged if it is 1# or 25#. So I
think you can see where you can save $ by buying
in volume. :hmm:
snake-eyes :hatsoff:

I just bought 25 lbs of FFF Goex and it cost me about $10.90 a lb delivered... Hank

i live 20 miles from a goex dist....J & J pyro in moscow PA at bout 11.00 dollars a pound.........bob

From Graf one does not have to order a case, can be ordered in smaller lots. $10.59 a lb + Hazmat fee, but free shipping via Fedex to your door.

(as per Graf Web Site: The minimum order of powder is 4 lbs)

Also, IMHO, the Graf brand of BP is one of the better BP brands out there.

See link to Graf here under powders.

I guess I am really spoiled and don't know it. My favorite gun shop is 6 miles from where I shoot and hunt. They stock Goex in Fg thru 4f. Pay about $12.50 plus tax. Generally buy just a pound or two at a time. They also carry balls and bullets in several diameters, caps, patches and even flints. Maybe that is why it is my "favorite" shop. I know the new regs make it more difficult on the shop owner but he is very customer oriented and wants to stock what his clients need. (that way he makes money)

Hey,

Some of you guys are lucky to live so close to blackpowder. In TN most hunters use inlines and BP substitute so that is what is offered on the shelves at most stores. I have called every gun store within 2 counties drive and noone offered regular BP. I dont have many friends that are into BP hunting so I couldnt split an order with them. I may have to get into a club where several members order in bulk like that and everyone splits the costs. The one place that has BP is an hour away but everyone is feeling the pinch of gas prices. I just thought if the Pinnacle works for others it might be easier for me to find in a pinch and I would use it some. Thanks for opening my eyes to those that ship it though. Thanks guys

If you can order 4 lbs from Graf & Sons, with shipping paid, and pay less than $12.00 per lb, what can you possibly be complaining about? And what is wrong with joining a BP club? That is how most of us learn, my friend. The friendships you develop there are the best you will make for your life. You will always find someone who can answer a question, or help you with a problem you have with your guns, or with shooting. The stocking of Black Powder has little to do with the in-lines( we don't speak of those here) or their using substitutes. It has everything to do with the storage regulations imposed by BATFE, which require dealers to store certain quanties further than a cetain distance from residential properties. Since most gun stores want to be in a commercial area, which almost always is adjacent to residential areas, these storage requirements have proven more costly than the dealers want to fool with. Everyone has made adjustments to keep a supply of black powder.

If you are practicing enough, you should be able to go through 4 lbs. of black powder a year without any trouble at all. If not, then split even a short order with a buddy. If you are shooting flint, order one lb of 4f and 3 lbs of 2f in your first order. The 4f is priming powder and will last you many years.

They have a graf brand of powder. Is it good powder? If somebody already said it was sorry I missed it.

We have a GOEX rep who contacts our club a couple times a year taking orders for case lots of powder. He even delivers to the club on match days. This is by far the best way to buy BP. Our Goex rep even takes orders for mixed cases which is how I buy as I load for a variety of BP applications from shotshells to pistol cartridges and muzzleloaders.

I have never shot the Graf & Sons powder, but some people on this forum have previously said it is good powder, and Graf actually sells it at a lower price than Goex. Both would then be cheaper than the substitutes, another reason to buy BP.

Seems that my powder supplier hasnt renued his license and no one else around here sells it.They sell the substitutes but I dont really care for it.I shoot a flintlock also so I need the real stuff. The guy I was buying it from sold it for $17.95 a lb.Ive went through 12 lb since January and Pyrodex aint gonna cut it.Thats cool they will let ya order 4 lb at a time.

It is identical to the Schuetzen brand of BP, made in the same facility. Bears the Graf label, but sells at a much better price.

Since I made the switch to Graf, it is the only BP I use and have been very satisfied with it.

Since Dupont went belly up on BP, one has had several brands to select from, but not all of them are good. (the Pachyderm dung comes to mind, sorry stuff it proved to be, only got one decent container out of several))

So the Grafs is no longer made by Wano Powder Company in Germany??? That's what was reported on another ML messageboard.

The only place to get real black powder in my area is Dave's Pawnshop here in Crossville and he's gone up from $12 bucks a Lb. to almost $17 bucks. I checked on ordering form Powder Inc but at a 5 Lb. lot with the Haz Mat fee it'd be about the same as getting a Lb from Dave's. I really need to find a few guys to go in with and get a bulk 25 Lb lot buy, that'd split up the Haz Mat fee a lot more and make it more affordable. :hmm:

Have you checked the prices at Graf& Sons? Seems to me you can order a smaller number of cans( 4 lbs.) and pay the lower price, even for Goex.

Wano in Germany is the manufacturer for Schuetzen, it and Graf's is made with Alder charcoal, (one of the best for BP) same as the Swiss.

Bill Knight (the Mad Monk of blackpowder) ran the tests on Schuetzen & Graf's, he found they were one and the same. Bill Knight is consultant to explosive makers worldwide with a special expertise in black powder

What brand name one sees on a lable can be a bit confusing, whole lot of incest going on in the firearms and powder industries.

You might want to try Parker and Sons in North Knoxville. It would be about an 1 1/2 hr for you. I dont know if they still sell it or not I think when I bought some it was around $13lb. If you would like to go in together on some let me know I am about an hour away from you.
