i was wondering if i should use 3 fg or 2 fg in my 50 cal cva , i use 3fg in my 45 t/c. but some one told me i shouldnt use it in a 50 cal.what do u guys use ?

If you line up 12 guys, 6 will use 2f,,
and a half dozen will be using 3f.

3f will work fine in your 50, no need to get different powder for each gun if you don't want too.
It's all about working up the load anyways.

As was stated there are different opinions about using 3Fg powder in the .50 and larger calibers.

Many feel there is less fouling when they are using the finer 3Fg powder and in some guns it seems to shoot more accurately. By the same token, in some guns it does not shoot as accurately. The only way to know how it works in your gun is to try some.

The general thought about the load is that using about 10 percent less 3Fg powder gives about the same velocity as 2Fg powder.

I switched from FFg to FFFg in my flintlock longrifle last winter (reducing load by 10%) and the groups shrank to half their previous size. I had another gun that was more accurate with FFg. Just depends on the gun, I guess. FFFg will give you more shots per pound due to the reduced charge weight, though!

thanks alot guys , thats what i need to know , i have never used a 50 cal before so i wasnt sure

I go with the flow here, I use FFFg in my .62 with less fouling. Since I'm able to reduce my charge over FFg, I save money since I can get at least 10 more shots per pound of BP. That may not sound like much, but after a while, it adds up!

My 50 with a GM barrel seems to prefer 2f where my CVA mountain rifle 54 groups better with 3f, go figure!

You will just have to try both and see what works best in your rifle.
