Yes, black powder doesn't detonate like a stick of dynamite...it just burns fast and if in a tightly sealed container like a safe or a capped pipe, a bomb blast is the result...that's why its shipped cross country in a simple cardboard box because if by some accident its caught in a fire, it won't explode like a bomb...

Bob: I am not jumping on the guy. I just was concerned that he was addressing the wrong cause of this accidental explosion. There is no reason to throw the baby out with the bath water.

I once had an Accidental Discharge( AD) at my house, and ruined a pillow, put a hole through a wall, barely missed my cat, who was sleeping on the other side of the wall, and put a hole into a second wall, where the bullet was lost behind drywall.

I had NO BUSINESS loading that gun in the house- PERIOD! It "went off " because I was violating basic safety rules, and doing something more dangerous than I thought it was going to be. At least my rifle was pointed in a safe direction, although I could not know that the Poohbah had decided to pick that spot to take an afternoon nap! He had found a spot obscured by a book case.

I was lucky I only destroyed the pillow, and had three holes to patch in the walls. It was relatively minor work.

Our friend here is faced with monumental expenses to restore his house. My heart goes out to him.

I don't see anything wrong with storing it in your house, but ya ain't supposed to shoot it! :haha:

Glad you're ok and I hope you can get the house back into shape without too much expense.

As the guys have already said, please be careful when handling guns indoors. I've been lucky and not had a discharge, but I'm also a fanatic about checking the chamber before I handle the gun. Even if I set it down, I check the chamber again when I pick it back up. It helps reinforce the habit.

no i was not jumping on him either. but to blame the powder for a unsafe act. we all do it.

back when i built 1911's i had a fresh one took it to the culb and was banging away with then i had one of the hard cci primers that would not go off. hit it about 5 times then put the pistol on the seat and shot someting else.
got home took them all in forgot about the round in the chamber. later picked it up pointed it out the window and dry fired it. the hammer fall felt strange so i did it again. that time it took out the inside window the screen and the storm window. yes that was lucky and dumb.
