Do you have any big sportings goods like Cabela's in your area? They won't have it on display and you would need to ask for it, and not just any guy behind the counter but someone higher up the food chain. Have you searched for any muzzleloading stores, mostly small shops run by guys who sell stuff at rendezvous, contact any local muzzloading clubs.

I take a 2 hr., one way, drive to get mine but could get it closer but that store is kind of fun trip.

Yeah, we have a Cabela's, I didn't think of asking directly. And we don't seem to have any muzzleloading shops near here

I notice you live in SC. The Cabela's in Fort Mill does NOT have BP. If you ask, you will be shown the stuff like Triple 7 and told that is our black powder.
There is a shop in Hickory, NC that sells it. There are way more places up north selling it, if you every drive up to PA on I-81. You can stop in around Gettysburg, there is a shop there that sells it at OK prices.
Mail order is cheapest if you can do at least 10 - 15 pounds. As noted it keeps for at least 100 years.

Okay, thanks for the heads up. I don't really have the funds to buy that much

Plenty of places, purchase in bulk or it's useless... However I'd still pay shipping and haz fees for one can of black over a synthetic any day. I purchase from maine powder house, been doing business with them for years. Give them a look as you should with the many others and go from there. :thumb:

Check your Local Bass Pro Shoo/ Outdoor World.

Go to the gun counter ask too speak too a Supervisor and explain to them what you want.

If you just ask whomever is behind the counter , they may or may not know what your looking for.

It’s kept locked away in the back, not out on the shelves.

Or ask around about a Local Rendezvous or Muzzle Loading Club in your area.

I get mine from Graf's & Sons https://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/category/categoryId/3501 . The problem you're having is the shipping and hazmat fee are "fixed", so IF I bought a single pound, the hazmat and shipping are more than the cost of the powder. SO..., what you have to do is buy more than a pound. The fee to me is $17, so for 10 lbs. of powder per order that only raises the price of powder (on sale) from $15 per pound to $16.70. ;) Not too shabby considering that powder where I live, costs over-the-counter a whopping $24.00 a pound for basic GOEX. I mix it up with 1Fg for my Bess, 2Fg for live fire with my shotgun, tradegun, and carbine, and 3Fg for blanks and shooting my rifles. Giving away a pound here and there to other shooters that I know as birthday or Christmas gifts rounds out my order. Especially IF you're in an area where real black powder is hard to attain, it's a pretty inexpensive gift and is really appreciated, for sure!:thumb:

Not sure where in SC you are, but Ledfords Trading Post in Hickory NC has it. That's where I buy my Goex powder. May be worth the drive for you if you're in the Upstate. The price is on the steep side (last time it was $28 a can) but it's the only place I can find it over the counter in my area, and if I only want a can or two, it's still cheaper than the haz-mat fees ordering only a couple cans by shipping.

I buy mine from Graf & Sons as they usually have good prices plus they have a $7.95 flat rate shipping and $10 hazmat fee. I just ordered some the other day cause they had their brand black powder on for sale for around $14 per pound. bought 12 pounds for that price

I've always purchased mine from Powder Inc., but I just did a comparison and found Graffs to be cheaper by far, and that was including the hazmat fee and shipping. I didn't try to do so but assume you can mix different sizes in one order. When it comes time to order the stuff I seldom need only one size. I use 1fg in my Martini Henry and Snider Enfields, and 2fg in my larger bore rifles, 3fg in my smaller calibers. I purchased some 4fg some years ago and have enough to prime my flintlocks for the rest of my natural life, especially seeing as I often just prime using 3fg if that is what I'm charging with that day. A bit over $100 bucks is a lot to shell out for five lbs. of powder, but that brings the hazmat down to $2 a can, I can shell out at least $100 for several cans of smokeless to reload given I need different makes and models of the stupid stuff, stupid costly sport anyway, and to top it off many of the firearms I shoot require ammunition not commercially loaded and that means expensive brass, and sometimes casting my own slugs, and if you think powder is expensive to have shipped try buying soft lead from across the country and having it shipped to you. If you know anyone in your area who also shoots black powder you might see if they would like to share an order with you. Graff's per lb. price right now is very reasonable, the best I have seen at just under $17 a pound, plus hazmat and standard shipping. Sorry, got carried away, will shut up now.
