Iam considering buying a blackpowder pistol. I currently have 3 bpr rifles in 50cal. , so I would like to stay in that cal. Will be used for fun shooting and trail walking. Any recommandations?? Thankyou..

There is a huge extreme from $225 dollar Spanish kits to $3,000 custom silver mounted fancies that are too nice to get sooty with.

If you are looking for a knock around gun, there are the Traditions and Lyman's, a little more dollar for a Pedersoli. You want flint, percussion, rifled smooth bore, traditional colonial design, plains, or modern.

Old CVA's are pretty cheap, and not bad for the money.
the only real issue I have with the 2 CVA pistols I have is the locks could have been better made. They are functional but they don't strike the nipple square on. They are a tad off.

Often the classified ad's on the forum have some good buys on used pistols.
You might want to check there?

I have a Lyman Plains Pistol in .50 that I like a lot. Accurate and dependable.

One shot demands one shot expertise and the means of achieving it. Not easy with pistol. Try out the hand to pistol fit and how you can make it work.

For the money the Lyman Plains Pistol is hard to beat in IMHO. I have a .50 since the 90's. They will shoot.

I agree with that. I paid 50. in a pawn shop.

I was inspired by the rework, you did on yours, and am planning to give my old gun a make-over.

Pedersoli pistols are nice, BUT way over priced, a Lyman is resonably priced, and will shoot with best of pistols available.
The locks on CVA pistols are way too much problem to even consider.
The Lyman locks are worry free. So does that make it hard to make a choice?

With a little creative shopping you could put together a simple trapper pistol kit fron PRL for less than what you'll pay for a Pedersoli. They'll cut the barrel back and thread the breech and install the plug for cheap and the rest is up to you.
The Lyman will still be cheaper though.

Lyman's pistol is unavailable in flint, never made.

CVA sold percussion guns with four different locks. One lock was far better than the others, but it is hard to find that model pistol.

I have a Traditions Trapper in 50 cal percussion. Have used it in club matches for a few years with no problems from the pistol. Very accurate, lock is fine and has the double set triggers. I like the looks of it and the shape of the grip works well for me with the raised nub on the grip providing a repeatable positive grip when shooting with one hand. Don't think you can beat it for the money and as far as I know it is available in flint as well.
