Only during hunting season. :haha:

Personally, I find that restriction too limiting.

lol, j/k

For pigs, which is 90% of what I care about, I've found the ground to be more effective. Unless you're sitting over a feeder or bait pile you're more likely to hear pigs some distance away or see them on the move some distance away. If you're not in a stand you can get up and go after them and try to sneak up on them bedded down or intercept them while they're moving from one area to the next.

In this country, where most of my hunting is vertical, a tree stand just puts you at eye level with the elk. Not good. And for you young whipper-snappers, I have tried just about everything, and a ground blind gets me close and personal to the critters. Not too long after I gave up on tree stands, I was bow-hunting, and had an elk surprise me by coming in downwind. (Us westerners don't stink, either!) He snorted over my right shoulder, and blew snot all over my face and neck. Sold me on ground hunting.

Hunting out of a deer stand gives you a lot more advantages than you old timers care to admit. You fail to realize that your visibility is increased greatly by being above the ground cover canopy.

:haha:

Believe it or not sometimes a hunter may limit his advantages on purpose.

A lot of you young'ins fail to realize the sport appeals more to some old farts than the kill.

Besides. Sitting like a vulture in the cold stiffens up 'dem ol' bones and many of us have a hard enough time shufflin about on hard ground without thinking of climbing trees.

:rotf:

When hunting with a muzzleloader, I mostly find a good spot on the ground and plunk my hinder down. I may try to get into a deadfall a bit or get into a small drywash that covers most of my body, but many times I just sit still against a tree. I like pop-ups for turkey, but at least in my area, I find deer are very leery of them, even when brushed in. Something that big is noticed by smart whitetails.

Something new I am trying this year is a ghillie suit made by Rancho Safari. This is a really heavy-duty ghillie of high quality. It's called the "Shaggie 3-D Cover System Ghillie" and I'll only be able to use it for bow hunting unless I can put some orange on it somehow without ruining the effect the suit is trying to produce.

i get hog wire and make a circle with it and then wrap it with camo cloth u can buy at any hunting store. u can make it any size u want and when u sit in it all u can see is the top of your shoulders and head. i have shot a lot of deer this way and it cost about $25 per blind

I too use hog wire to erect my ground blind. covered in camo cloth and natural material at hand sure blends me into the surroundings. Haul everything in an out on my deer cart. Got a small folding seat with an attched bag for my lunch and water bottle. Makes it great if you want to stay all day.

I hunt from a ground blind. I usually find a spot where two or three trees are close together. I then fill in the open spots with downed branches that still have their leaves. I alway need to cut shooting lanes but i prefer to be able to move around without worrying about falling out of a tree.
