Blowing down the barrel

Hello all, newbie here with a newbie question. Why when I open some conversations do I get the following comment, “You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action.” With most I don’t but do with some.

The means that the comment was in a "premium member" area..., like on cable TV when you are not a paying member of HBO and switch to the HBO channel.

True, but not relevant to this thread. We are talking about blowing down the barrel AFTER the gun HAS fired. When I fire my muzzleloaders, there is a loud bang that tells me my gun has fired and therefore is no longer loaded. Been working for me since Ike was President.

Lol...honestly I do blow down the barrel between shots..cartridge and muzzloaders. Like others have said, if you don't remember that you discharged a single shot rifle, mabey you don't need to be handling a firearm.

Yep, as if the BANG, recoil and Smoke would be overlooked even a few minutes after firing.
Maybe turning off their hand phones and leaving them in the Car would help.
When Im shooting, hunting; with my Horses or camping out my handphone is off and unused for how many days it needs to be.

Well the next time someone kills them self blowing down a barrel be sure to write it up and post it on the forum. All of us that do need the object lesson to stop this silly activity.
If your over forty be sure to leave your grandchildren instructions for posting any such accident on the forum in the future
Maybe in your grandchild’s lifetime. Such an event will happen and all the antis will have one event to point to.

I blow down my barrel most of the time, but I'm one of the lucky ones born with enough common sense to recognize when my rifle goes off. If it doesn't go off, avoid the muzzle and keep it pointed in a safe direction.

If you are one of the folks born without the common sense needed to recognize if your rifle goes off, or you go around picking up other people's rifles and blow down the barrel. Please stop, reevaluate your hobby selections, perhaps checkers would be a better (safer) choice.

I plan on burning some powder today, I'll not blow down the barrel and see if the fouling is tougher than when I do.

Gooberelli, I've been blowing down the barrel since I was 15 and I'm 58 now. So WHO are YOU to tell me how to do anything? I started doing it way back when I saw smoke still coming out the touch hole. I'm continue without your "mommy may I" hoo hoo.

I don't have cook off's, I've never shot the ram rod down range. Yes, I've dry balled -- everyone has (or they're a LIAR) . But ya know what? I load my own gun and I damn well know if it has went off. I absolutely won't have a cook off because some Aunt Mary tells me I can't blow down the barrel.

You get tired of the puffy know it alls. If I hear "you'd be a damned fool to..." or "pilgrim, yer doing it wrong" they usually get the ignore button.

I do not see how the rubber ducky or ear cleaner provides the moisture your breath provides?

Have you ever checked the moisture content when a duck is passing gas?

I have blown down the barrel since I started shooting MLs 20 years ago, prior to that I hadn't ever been around a ML rifle or personally seen anyone shooting one so i'm a self taught barrel blower . I didn't do it after my very first shot all those years ago and when I poured the powder down the bore the air displaced by it forced all the smoke still lingering in there backout the muzzle. I instantly didnt like seeing the gun smoking while was pouring powder so on the next shot the idea popped into my head to blow down the bore... and the rest is history. As for accidentally shooting myself in the kisser? if I cant tell the difference between a pan flash and 100gr of 3F igniting then I have a more serious problem.

How many times has it been posted here where someone double loaded?

Seems not to long ago someone double loaded and their rifle ruptured.

I don'tthink anyone has an ill intent? I think that people have a tendency to repeat what they hear , and read without really checking it out. I have had a M.L. rifle for many years and I have learned something from others here and elsewhere. I also hear and read things that just don't make any sense.

Easy to tell participants in the ML shotgun shoots by their "kiss of death" black outlined lips. Now the really brave/dumb ones would always blow down the fired barrel on a double barrel while the other one was still loaded and capped.

I blow down my barrel, but draw the line and will not blow on other people’s barrels!

Is it necessary? Probably not.

Is it dangerous? I only do it immediately after I shoot. At that time, I have pretty good feedback that it went “boom”.

Do I blow down my barrel any other time? No I don’t and won’t. I Don’t trust my memory to know condition of gun.

Is it wise? Probably not, in my mind less risky than being overweight and the daily driving I do.

Should I stop doing it? Probably…,especially at public shooting events; it makes folks nervous.

I’ve been blowing down my barrel for sooo long it’s like second nature…the amount of smoke that comes out of the touch hole is just satisfying, knowing that the barrel and touch hole are clear. I think this is why I never need a vent pick!
