I have a .54 cal. ball shooter. I shoot a .535 ball and a .018 pillow ticking patch over 90 grains of "double f" black powder. I have had great performance with this load for years out of the same rifle. Just recently I purchaced a new can of powder. (the same manufacurer and granualation) The patches were never blown, but now they are. I have changed nothing in the load but a new can of powder. Could this new can of powder be burning hotter than the previous can? What can I do to prevent patch blow out with this new can of powder?

There are a couple of easy things to check first, namely ball size and patch thickness. Then possible bore roughness. Try dropping back 5 grains to see if the powder you are using now is a little hotter. If all else fails, make sure you are using your old ticking or whatever and it is the same. I got some of thet new improved GWANGZHOU GOLD, SPECIAL HEAVEN 100% CHINA BEST cotton ticking and it just isn't the same, even tastes different.Wonky
