i have a t/c hawken 50 that will blow a hole thru patches unless i use wasp nest as a filler. i have tried all types of material and thickness and also cornmeal but unless i use wasp nest it will blow a hole right thru. i just bought a t/c renegade 54 with the same patch same powder and same charge 80gr of ff no filler and patches that look i could use them again. any ideas? i thought of a bad barrel but t/c maxiballs throw a 1 to 2" group at 50 yrds i can do about the same group with rb providing i protect the patch. are they both 1 and 48 twist?

Sounds like you already have the problem solved - lots of BP shooters use wasp nest. I have and will again when I run out of felt discs.

If you are shooting Maxiballs you may have lead fouling in the bore. I would try getting the lead out of the bore. Use some lead remover and steel wool. Their is no reason for this problem and only wasp nest can cure it.

I agree with Redwing, I think that lead fouling is your problem. Try a bronze bore brush made for blackpowder. Make sure that the brush large twisted wire makes a loop through the threaded part not just a crimp. Do not push the brush in to the patent breach or it will get stuck and you will have to unbreach the barrel to remove it, been there and done that.
Clean with a good lead remover solvent and I believe that you will be as good as new.
Good Luck,

Another vote for your barrel being leaded up from those Maxi-balls. Give that sucker a good scrubbing with Butch's Bore Shine or similar product, get that lead fouling out. On the patches try liberal amounts of Wonder Lube 1000 or similar and see if that will not solve the problem.

I remember reading not long ago on another thread with a similar problem, and Paul V. had the following idea: a very small burr in the rifling may be tearing the patch as you finish ramming the ball down. Additional material could be preserving the "gas check" behind the partially torn patch! I think this is what Paul said, if I remember correctly.

As to leading-up the bore by shooting conicals, I don't think so! My trade rifle has a 1 in 48 twist and I go back & forth between PRB's and conicals without a problem and have won matches with both. Today I shot grapes at 25 yds. with PRB's after shooting 50 T/C 370 gr. .50 cal. Maxi's using 70 gr of 3F Goex last week. Only my normal cleaning was required to attain this level of accuracy.

By the way, my rifles only eat lead. No cereal or fillers or nests of any kind.

One last thought: where the ball winds-up is alot more important than what the patch looks like. Some guns eat patches, some don't :winking: .

i have tried scrubbing the barrel and use a brush on every cleaning.i have never tried any chemical other than soap and water use bore butter as a lube . could there be that much build-up of lead?
