While I was removing material under the cheekpiece, a portion of the wood pulled out and I ended up about 3/16ths lower than I had intended all the way back to the buttplate. I left the area behind the cheekpiece at the original level. I now have a very nice area to do some kind of decorative carving. I have no clue about relief carving. What is the best book or online source to learn about relief carving? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Get some decent tools. All carving techniques are much harder with a cheap , dull, or inadequate gouge. I don't know what you have in your area, but around here the only good source is Rockler. It is possible to find the cheaper Japanese carving tools for less here too. As far as books go, there are some that are specific to gun carving, but the relief carving technique is discussed in more detail elsewhere in the books on general woodcarving. It would probably be a good idea to flip through the offerings at the local book retailer and pick one that suits you rather than order one blindly by title. Good luck and take some snapshots for us when you are done.

Try and find a copy of "Gunsmiths Tips and Projects"
It has several articals by the late John Bevins on carving. I'm sure it would be a help.
