Sharp Shooter, try the Titus Bass series of mountain man novels, by Terry Johnston. The series covers Titus' story from about 1810 to the mid 1840s, from his teenage years in Kentucky through the mountain man/fur trade era, and his adventures on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers prior to landing in St. Louis. There are 9 books in the series and each one is a very good read. Some book copies can be hard to find, but web searches can locate them. Enjoy! mjw

Then along with the Titus Bass series:

The Big Sky and it's follow up the Far, Far, Land by AB Guthrie, Jr

Trask by Don Berry

Mountain Man by Vardis Fisher

Life in the Far West by George Frederick Ruxton
