The furniture company whose land I have hunted for 25 years has leased the hunting rights to a group of sportsmen. :curse: I was politely given the boot at first light. My beloved ground blind (11 deer on opening day since 1997, multiple doubles).   I relocated to a spot I bowhunt just outside the track on a farmer's land in thick hemlocks, and along comes a second "sport" who told me I had to leave.

I said: "You're off XXXXX land."

He said "Nope, it goes all the way to the road."

"Nope, those yellow and green blazes upslope mark the line."

"Get off! You have to leave. You have no choice."

"A man with a gun ALWAYS has a choice."

He said he was going to call the Sheriff. I told him to call from the farmer's house. Be sure to mention you've annexed his land. Never heard back. But I did drop in on the farmer and he's anxious to speak with one of these fellows working his land but denying access to others on theirs. :haha:

Saw two does at speed, no shot. Had my front stuffer & PRB for the regular season opener.

Heard plenty of shooting from the area of my blind. :curse:

Well at least there was no shooting.... It is what is happening all over the country.

In Wisconsin over the weekend near Hayward WI a fellow wearing camo was on private property in another mans tree stand. When he was asked to leave he came off the stand then started shooting. One of the wounded people called for help on the cell phone and as others showed up he gunned them down too. Last count was six dead and two seriously wounded....

Madison Wisconsin newspaper artical for those that have not heard about this incident...

It's on the news everywhere, I'm sure the liberal media will use it against us. It's just another sign of the times. In the last days men will have no conscious and the love of many will wax cold.

I'd say the shooter has no regard for human life at all and there is no love in his heart. :nono:

Back to original thread. Way to stand your ground, Stumpy!

This is the future of hunting.... As our population expands, hunters will continue to lose "free" hunting areas to those who buy/lease areas to hunt. Our group lost 15,000 acres last year to a group that was willing to pay .25 cents more an acre, luckily we had another area to hunt. We are presently looking for another area to lease. Once it's found we will pay for the rights to hunt and probably have to ask hunter like Stumpy to either join our club or find another place.
Stumpy did this fellow commit any grievance other than not knowing the boundary lines? Harassment?
The reason I was asking is that I have a stand on the border of another clubs. This one guy didn't like the fact that I had a stand there and proceeded to dump his deer guts under my stand, twice. I finally got tired of it and got my trail camera and attracted it to a tree that faced my stand. Sure enough a couple days later I got 3 pictures of him doing it again. We have a couple Game Wardens in our group and after showing one of them the pictures, decided to pay him a visit. He claimed he didn't do it until he was shown the pictures. He got a $1,000 fine and 1 year restriction on his hunting license.
The only thing the anti-hunters have done for hunters is give us laws that allow for prosecution of those that harass or disrupt us.

Stumpy,
Way to protect yourself! :D It is getting so a hunter really has to be more than extra careful out there. I hunt a private farm in Maryland. The owner let's others hunt there even though it is more open area than wooded. My son and I were sitting in an "L" shaped corner of the woods when several shots rang out and went right over our heads! :: When a boy in his early 20's came out, I gave him you know what and believe it or not, he denied shooting in our direction. He was walking the woods, kicked up a doe and started blasting. He's lucky I didn't shoot back. Needless to say, he has been barred from hunting the property. :redthumb:

That is one of the many reasons I bought my own land. Trouble finding land I was comfortable hunting on, nephews and others in the family own about 1,000 acres all together, but they all hunt on it, the kids and friends. Public areas are numerious here in MO, but crowded. So I broke down and bought my own place and patrol it regularly to protrect my fences.

Worked for me.

stumpkiller - sorry to hear about losing your honeyhole! :curse:

Hopefully, this new place will be the ticket for you...!

I gained permission to hunt my brother's inlaws a few years ago (they said, SURE...you are family). I spoke with them at that time and got the other guy's phone # that hunted there. I called them to tell them I would be hunting there and to find out where they would be, so I wouldn't screw them up. I drove 2hrs down, hung my stand and awaited the opener. A buddy drove down from Michigan to hunt and we showed up about an hour before light and I couldn't find my stand...? I scanned the woods with my flashlight, and saw my stand and climbing stick thrown in some bushes to the side. :curse: I put the stand back up in the dark :curse: for my buddy and he climbed aboard.

At lunch I waited for the other 2 guys and found that a 3rd guy had "done the deed". Guess who showed up 30minutes later...3rd guy. :D

He asked if I was Wess, to which I replied, "Yes." I immediately asked him if he messed with my stand and he said he had. I asked him why, and he said he didn't like anyone hunting there. I mentioned that I had driven 2hrs down/back and my buddy had driven 9hrs to hunt that stand. And, that I had been proactive to work with the others hunting there, so everyone would get along. Then, I asked him to leave and to never show his face while I was there again. It was extremely tough to keep my cool, but it was the right thing to do :what:

The other 2 guys still hunt the farm, and ol' number 3 has never shown up since.

Good luck if'n you get out again!

Not really. The first guy was very pleasant actually. Said I could finish out the day if I wanted. But then he sat within 80 yards of me and another two joined in within 100 yards of me. Two of them were sitting shoulder-to-shoulder :shocking: This on 3,000 acres of land. :youcrazy: Must be city folk, 'cause I get nervous within 600 yards of other hunters. I left after observing two of the gang (the "siamese-twins") shoot 15 shots over four "events" and only get up once to see if a deer had been hit. :curse: I just left without voicing my opinion of their methods.

Two hours later the "arse-clown" came by and tried to toss me off land that was not part of the lease. I had lost my pleasant mood by then.

Today I put a half-mile between us. I saw a couple antlerless deer today just about dark and didn't have a shot. Maybe 40 yards and in VERY heavy cover. The season is young.

I said I would never join a hunting club. But I now belong! It was that or quit hunting. Well I could hunt the management areas, but I consider that to dangerous!

Stumpy, if in fact they are city folk, they may hunt the land on a limited basis, such as the first day. A little bit of homework and salesmanship my get you back on the land with their blessing. If you can get a contact of the club, you may inquire if they are interested in starting a quality management program where they need the does thinned out so they can take nice bucks. You would be interested in thinning out the doe, no charge to them. You would not hunt there opening day or any day they call you and let you know they will be there. If you are there and they are not when Mr. Big walks out, then I guess you have a decision to make :hmm:.
Good luck.

my place has plenty of room for me to hunt although i have access to other family owned property .i quit rifle hunting on public land about 20 years ago after being shot at on two seperate occasions .now i occasionally bow hunt on public land or enter the state lottery for a hunt .
the biggest problem here are day hunters who dont know how to read i.e no trespassing, or shoot everything in sight i.e fawns ,rabbits cows etc.it really boils my taters to realize how many of these so called hunters havent got a clue about true sportsmanship nor respect for property or wild life.
allthis does is give anti gun people more ammunition

had a nice 6 point up hill in the trees bout 100 or so yards with 3 does but couldn't see brow tines maybe a 8 point ::....well they fed down hill right torward me for bout 45 min just bout in the more open woods then they were in....two does were in the open bout 60 yards out with the buck and other doe coming right along ....then i hear a atv coming and they went back up over the hill they came down and gone ::....it was my buddies father on his atv i was suposed to use that mourn but couldn't cause his dad said he had to check on something so i had to walk up a cliff more or less to the top....i thought he was talking bout the trailer he rented out to some guys....not to ride up in the woods....well bout 45 mins later here he comes again :what: :curse:....i just got up and left the woods went down to the cabin and grabbed my stuff and left to go home....he asked mw why i was going and i told him what happened and asked him why he was riding up there....he said he was trying to push some deer for us ....he said i could go out still this afternoon and still have a chance ....i said i had a chance before he went and blew it for me.....i just grabbed my stuff and left....and that wasn't the end of my bad day....i got to the N.Y - PA boarder and was ready to cross over at narrowsburg and a N.Y. staty was eyeballing everone for there seatbelts and pointed to me to pull over....i pulled over right in front of him in N.Y. and he came up to me and told me to go across the bridge in PA and pull over with my lic and paper work and said he was giving me a ticket for not wearing my seat belt....got over there and did the routine and told him my setbelt stopped working bout 6 days ago and tugged on it to show him it didn't work....he said i should have got it fixed a week ago....gave me my ticket and went back over the bridge into N.Y....my question is can they pull me over for just for not wearing my setbelt?....and do it in PA....and still give me a ticket after proof of it not working to where i can't wear it....well it was just a bad day all around......................bob

What can a NY Trooper do? Anything he wants to. :haha: I guess if he spotted you in NY he can follow up in PA (reciprocal agreement, or something like that). Seems odd he'd make you go back into PA to ticket you?? Maybe he gets a bonus for "Hot Pursuit" across state lines?

I checked with the furniture co. These guys are paying around $20,000 for the year-round hunting rights! Hokey smokes! They can also build a cabin or drive a camper or ATV's onto the land. Wonder if they need a guide? :: According to the company they have woodlots all over middle NY. As a last resort I might see if there is a tiny section still available in my wildlife unit (permits are issued lottery style by units). Heck, I can still hunt a couple acres behind my house in a patchy & mostly posted woodlot if I am careful. I've jumped one two mornings in a row in my back yard while walking the dog, but if it was wounded and made it 100 yards onto "THAT GUY'S" land he would shoot me for following. (We've had words). He hunts and allows NO ONE to come on his 25 acres of land, wounded deer or not. :curse: The only thing I'm really upset about is the pure self-pity of having to suddenly hunt "cold" without knowing the deer's patterns. That blind was only ever good on the first two days of the season when the deer are freaked and ducking for cover. Now I have to learn to hunt all over again. ::

I had a 40 yard shot at an antlerless in THICK cover last evening right at sundown that I wasn't quite desperate enough to take . . . yet. I don't consider round balls to be bush buckers. If it had only turned towards me instead of away . . . That's why it's called hunting and not killing I guess.

Stumpy, yours is a sad and all too frequent tale these days. In the last six years Ive lost as many places to hunt, most of which have houses on them today. I'm afraid the future of hunting belongs to money. I hate to be growing older, but at least I have many fine memories of unrestricted hunting on good land over in West-by-God. At least the deer herd remains strong.

You guys should move to Michigan. We are losing land to development, like everyplace else, but we often give thanks to those greedy old lumber barons. They logged off all the white pine and never paid taxes, so we have thousands and thousands of acres of tax-reverted state land in Michigan. One problem is that the most and biggest deer live in the farmlands of southern Lower Michigan, where there almost isn't any public land. Graybeard
