Hard on the finish on your gun and won't help your rust problem any.....

Best advice I can give anyone about muzzleloaders, is to stay out of the auto parts store....
Your muzzleloader is not a car......Period.

Looking for shortcuts to proper cleaning will ultimately cause you more problems....

Good enough for me. Thanks Colorado

Man... I bet I could really learn a lot shooting with you guys one on one.. My kind of people...hard core muzzle-loaders to the bone. Awesome!!

In many of the new barrels they are hot acid blued in the bore as well as the outside.
Lots of times what you are seeing is the blue coming off the bore on the patch.
WD-40 is notorious for thinning out bluing when used on the exterior and the same happens inside.
I use hot soapy water to dissolve the fouling, hot clear water to rinse, dry patch , wet patch with WD-40, dry patch and wet patch with Gunzilla.
Break-Free has worked really well as a rust prevent-or for me as well.

Sure!...........It's a bad idea.....

Brake cleaner, I prefer carburetor cleaner, works well to clean percussion nipples. The red straw that comes with the can just fits into a nipple and it blasts out the caked on carbon much better than water or soap. Carb cleaner will dissolve all traces of oil so re-oil them after cleaning, and before storage, or they could rust. Some of the muzzleloader ninjas on here will tell you that you can't use or don't need anything but water or soap and water. I say use what works for you.........robin

If I've shot a lot I'll run a bronze brush through it then more hot soapy patches with the breech in a bucket of soapy water. Then some fresh hot water and patches, dry patches (should come out clean), pour a bit of isopropyl dry gas down the muzzle and some more dry patches. The alcohol removes any traces of water. Then a rust preventive coated patch.

Okay...What the he** am I doing wrong? I cleaned my Pennsylvania rifle with tepid water and Dawn soap as suggested(after a reange trip last weekend). I did not as of yet have any Barricade as was suggested here, but I did have WD40 (which was also suggested). After I ran dry patches through (which came out clean)I applied a liberal amount of WD40 to a patch and ran it down the barrel. That was a week ago. Fast forward to tonight. I just received my Barracade and a drop in bore light via US mail. I take my rifle down and run a Barricade covered patch down the bore and it came out slightly brown "what the ****". I drop in the bore light and "holy manure" it would appear there is some minor pitting in the bore? I just do not get it? I cleaned with water and soap and dryed then applied WD40. Should the patch come out brown a week later? What am I not doing right? Please help with advise. Thanks.

I would think that if what you saw was indeed 'minor pitting' it was there before you cleaned your rifle.

If it were my rifle I'd clean it again and make sure I got everything out of the bore. Some JB bore paste should clean it up just fine, but I wouldn't go crazy with the stuff. If you find that there is some minor pitting, the JB might work wonders. Even if the JB doesn't remove all the pitting there are plenty of excellent shooting rifles that have a little pitting going on.

Good to hear about you getting a bore light that will help you see what's going on.
