Boredom leads to defarb of 58 remmy

Picked this older pietta up at the last gun show in good shape looks unfired but has been dry fired a lot it appears due to to mushroom of the cones. Either way nice gun and came with 3 cylinders paid 350 so I thought that was fair. Had it hanging around the bench and something was screaming defarb me! So I spent a couple hours and here is the outcome. Still might lighten up the case hardened hammer and trigger. But this is as it sits now. Didn’t do this to mislead or pass off as a fake but rather for my further enjoyment! Used a combo of plumb brown and bleach with heat to get the effects. Hope you enjoy!

Nice job! Can you give us an idea of how you use the Plum Brown and Bleach? Do you mix them or use the bleach to wash out the brown?

Absolutely do not mix them!
It’s a two step process I use the plumb brown first and rub it back to get the color I desire. Then spray the bleach on the metal and let it sit this will form small spots of rust. The you wipe it down and repeat if necessary. Again do NOT mix the bleach with the plumb brown

Thanks for sharing. I have been using things like ketchup, mustard and tomato juice for some years and they do a nice job of making the metal look well used.

I have always been under the impression that the term "Defarbed" meant you removed/peened any modern rollmarks and replaced them with period correct markings. I would interpret your work as "Aging", "Antiquing" or "Patina".

If you will note there are no longer any Italian proof marks or makers marks or “black powder only noted anywhere on the pistol. The only mark that is left in the pistol is the SN and me personally I was not willing to remove that although the BP pistols don’t count as firearms. That’s just me YMMV. But that seems like a defarb to me!

Good point MedicMike, I did look at your pictures very well and like you said I cannot see any proof marks. The serial number being the exception. you did a great job on that. If you have time, would you mind explaining just how you removed the markings so nicely? So well, that It appears to me as to have come that way from day 1. thanks

All marks were removed with a mill file then polished to the appropriate finish with emery cloth, then browned. I also draw files the barrel flats at that time cleaned up any rough marks from when it was built and softened sharp edges.
