I just made some side seam BT elk leggings. I made them so the stop about 5 inches above the knee. I wrapped some leg ties just under the knee and tried them on. They seem like they need something else to stay up. are they supposed to have ties that attach to the belt or should they just fit tighter?

As a Native I wear a SILK scarf folded into a triangle rolled and tied really tight,I mean tight and hang my breechclout and leggings from it.I use a brain tan thong and hang the leggings with a simple slip knot. You can do the same with a leather thong BUT its tends to cut into the gut whereas the scarf doesn't.I also carry an extra scarf usually pre tied just in case. Years ago when I did white man {before I saw the light}I hung the thong from the britches usually by adding buttons on each side and using a slot cut in the thong.I also still use garters fastened just below the knee. :v

There should be a strap (leather/wool/twill tape) that runs from the sideseam up to a belt.

I'm no legging expert but I think the eastern/Great lakes areas had the mid-thigh leggings and the plains Indians had the higher style with the thongs. The MFT has Alexander Henry's(?)leggings and there are slits in the tops where a thong would be run.
