Well after having retired, moving, and major surgery, I've finally started a rifle after a Twenty plus year Hiatus from building from scratch. I'm hoping it will be a late period (1850's) Ohio full stock in 40 cal. I've had the stock blank, lock and green mountain barrel for more than ten years. I'm hoping to photo journal it also. I'm using a book I first used in 1968 and while it's dated it covers most stuff.
My question is should I shave down the barrel so that the breechplug face bottoms on the shoulder of the barrel at the end of the threads, so there is no gap. I believe that is what I have done in the past. My rememberer ain't that good, going back thirty years or so. I do remember there was a 54 cal in the Dickert fashion, and a fusil/ fowler in 62 cal./ 20 gauge, both scratch built flinters. So I'm starting this new project on the first day of winter, and we'll see how long it takes. Reading, and viewing some of the projects on this site, especially rootnukes, has got my juices flowing. We've already had over four feet of snow before winter started, and I hope this will keep me from going snow crazy. Thanks, and sorry for being so long winded. I'll keep it shorter in the future Bill
