Well after having retired, moving, and major surgery, I've finally started a rifle after a Twenty plus year Hiatus from building from scratch. I'm hoping it will be a late period (1850's) Ohio full stock in 40 cal. I've had the stock blank, lock and green mountain barrel for more than ten years. I'm hoping to photo journal it also. I'm using a book I first used in 1968 and while it's dated it covers most stuff.
My question is should I shave down the barrel so that the breechplug face bottoms on the shoulder of the barrel at the end of the threads, so there is no gap. I believe that is what I have done in the past. My rememberer ain't that good, going back thirty years or so. I do remember there was a 54 cal in the Dickert fashion, and a fusil/ fowler in 62 cal./ 20 gauge, both scratch built flinters. So I'm starting this new project on the first day of winter, and we'll see how long it takes. Reading, and viewing some of the projects on this site, especially rootnukes, has got my juices flowing. We've already had over four feet of snow before winter started, and I hope this will keep me from going snow crazy. Thanks, and sorry for being so long winded. I'll keep it shorter in the future Bill

HI there Bill,
I assume that you are fitting a plug with a tang already fastened or as one piece. (shaving the barrel)
I make and bottom end fit my plug first, and then fit the tang to the back of the barrel. In any event you do not, and I repeat, do not want a gap. Two reasons that I know of and they are: 1. With a gap that will be your weakest point for pressure. the barrel is usually counterbored and thus the thinnest section of barrel right where pressure is greatest.
2. The gap will be a storage place for hot sparks. I am just repeating what I read somewhere and it makes sense. I am no expert by a long ways, but I am sure some, if not all of the other boys will agree that you don't want a gap.

Thanks for refreshing my noggin, I now remember that those are the two main reasons for mating the plug to the barrel with zero clearance :)
