I use heavy grease or antiseize, sometimes allox bullet lube. My thought is to exclude fouling and water from the threads by filling the spaces greasy stuff. A second reason is that if the thread fit is really tight, as it should be, you don't want to gall the threads and jam it up. When fitting a plug use some lube to prevent galling.

Looks like some good advice. Whatever, be sure to use something and don’t do as I did and install it dry. I twisted off a brass jag at the bottom of the breech on my Southern Mountain and can’t get the plug to budge. I have soaked it in every kind of anti-seize oil you can think of and no cigar! The only thing I haven’t tried is heating the barrel with a torch - that’s next. I would use the anti-seize stuff like in the bottle, but you don’t have to buy that amount - the parts house sells small packets for spark plugs and is required on HEMI aluminum heads. If it’ll work for that kind of heat, I would think it should do fine for breech plugs.

Have you tried soaking it in a 50/50 mix of acetone & automatic transmission fluid?
We called it “Voodoo Juice” because magical stuff happens when you use it.

Haven't found anything better than PTFE tape.. Beds into all the nooks and crannies and dosen't dry out like greases or gung.. Good on nipple threads too.Used it scince it was introduced. O.D.
