Hello,
I have an original Civil War era rifle with the tang broken at the stock screw. Should I have it welded or replace the tang. Trying to loosen a tang from a 140 year old barrel seems scary to me. The rifle would make a nice shooter if the tang was fixed.

I would have it welded, and re-patinaed to match the original. Replacing any parts takes value away from an old firearm.

I can recommend Monte Mandarino, Kalispell, Montana, for restoration work, or Tim Mitchell, Marion, Montana. I'm sure there are a lot more out there that can do a good job.
