For sale is a Brown Bess 3rd Model, India Pattern musket. Please note the title is incorrect, these are India Patterns.

$580, free shipping.

The kit requires a bit of work, comes from Rajasthan Armory. Same manufacturer as Veteran Arms. I do want to note that people like Military Heritage use AHU which produces cheaper Indian muskets, hence the price difference. Rajasthan is more expensive, higher quality. You won't find Rajasthans for sale at less than $750, without shipping.

Required Work:
-Drill the 1/16" touch hole.

Recommended Work:
-Stain the stock to a walnut color.
-Clean off the "travel grease" used to protect it on its long sea voyage across the Pacific.
-Take the lock apart and polish up the moving parts. It'll operate in its kit form, but buddy, this 1 hour of work makes a world of difference.
-Go get a bayonet, a cartridge box and some flint!

I know my old ads were more descriptive, but after I got three pulled, I got tired of typing it out again. Happy to answer any questions you all have. No FFL required obviously, so it ships right to your door. I've built about 20 of these kits over the years, and they're fantastic ways to get into shooting military-grade muzzleloaders, without spending $1,700 on a Pedersoli. Heck, you could get three of these for that price!

Hobbyist. About once a year I import a few, keep some for my collection, and sell the rest to help cover the import fees. This year was 1730 Sea Service Pistols, 1795 Springfields and Brown Bess Short Lands. I kept one of each, the rest are here on the forum. The whole goal is really to just expand my collection, but I figured a few years ago if I'm already doing all the work importing and paying shipping and such, might as well grab a few more, help a few guys get some inexpensive muskets.

Last year was 1777 Charlevilles, Brown Bess India Patterns and 1842 Springfields. Next year, I'm probably going to get a French Fusil, some sort of arquebus, and a French cavalry carbine.

These ads should be corrected immediately or removed so that someone doesn't buy a misrepresented musket.

Quite frankly, the pitch here is sounding like serious Bovine Scatology to this reader - the manufacturer sent the wrong rifle - India Pattern - when Brown Bess rifles were ordered. But the seller is happy to advise that he bought the same rifles last year - India pattern - but can't tell the difference between it and a Bess and needs comparison pictures to understand the difference.

Minor misrepresentations can happen, but selling a musket that is not what the detailed description says it is, is a material misrepresentation meant to mislead. Especially when the seller starts their add with a detail history of the weapon as if they know and then does not fix the ads immediately when enlightened.

Well, first, I never claimed to be an expert. What you imply from my words is on you. I added a bit of history from Wikipedia in my own words and experiences. I'm always happy to be corrected, and you'll note that I was actively asking for clarification when someone mentioned I had incorrectly labelled these as 2nd Model. After all, aren't we all here to learn? So you can teach me about the differences between a Brown Bess 2nd and 3rd Model, and I can teach you that the word 'rifle' is not interchangeable with the word 'musket'. See? We're learning!

Everything is corrected except the titles, which I'm not sure how to correct. I already informed the one person who bought one, and they didn't care either way. I'd suggest, if you don't want to risk amateur mistakes, that you go pay $1,500 to the Rifle Shoppe. I am absolutely confident in TRS's ability to distinguish differences in the various models of the Bess. Then again they're a registered business who have made it their life's work to know about muskets, and I'm... a guy who likes to shoot muskets at potatoes, so you can see perhaps, the slight difference in knowledge.

I did import some Besses last year. A reenacting group bought all of them, so I don't actually have one to compare it against. Didn't look any different from the Besses I had, but then again, I owned them for a week before they sold. Sorry I don't have perfect memory?

Also, Rule 21. Aren't we not supposed to post anything on anyone's ads short of interest in purchasing, or corrections of mistakes? As much as I value your analysis on my sinister motives to sell someone a slightly different variation on the Bess. You have foiled my plans sir, curses!

I also believe the rules should be followed, so thank you for reminding others. My specific question about your firearm and statements pertaining to, is - what specifics have you found on why your Rajasthan product is higher quality than other lesser Indian-made products and in particular the comparable Military Heritage product which seems to require the same work and tuning to make shootable? Thanks for clarifying.

I've held AHU, seems to be thinner barrels, and a tougher spring. That could just be the examples I've held. I just wanted folks to compare Rajasthan to Rajasthan. MH uses AHU, who has different prices. A more comparable item would be from Veteran Arms, who charges $750 per musket, before shipping.

Dear T. Emard,
I don't know how to do a private conversation on the forum. Could you email directly at

[email protected]

I would like to discuss the muskets and the weight and length.
Thank you,
David

Thanks for the perspective. I believe Veteran Arms does all the kit work and sends a shootable, drilled, and tuned musket guaranteed to work with a lifetime Frizzen rehardening warranty, so I'm not quite sure if it's an apple-to-apples cost comparison. However, your price is less and helpful to someone looking to enter this great hobby or expand their collection without spending all the rent money. Best of luck with your sale.
